Guest guest
Dear Bhagavatas: I am forwarding my correspondence with Sri Madhava Kannan regarding observance of Sri Rama Navami Upavaasam and PaaraNai.He has kindly got the clarification from Asmad Acharyan H.H. Srimad Andavan of Poundarikapuram Swami Ashramam, Srirangam on the subject. This is for your information especially Ashrama Sishyas Dasoham Anbil Ramaswamy ======================================================== V Madhav <Madhavakkannan.V 'Ram Anbil' <ramanbil CC: "'mani'" <mani Ramanavami upavAsam and pAraNai Mon, 15 Apr 2002 19:54:04 -0500 SrI: SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya namah: Dear Sri Anbil mama, I checked with Asramam thru' my father and the answer is similar to what you had written also: 1. Only next day morning pAraNai like dwAdasi. 2. 12 noon, we can do ArAdhanam (on Rama navami- being a Sunday- holiday:-) with pAnakam and vadaparuppu (or whatever is the family tradition) 3. It is not mandatory to stay on fast for full day and one can take phala AhAram or tiffin like idli, after 12 noon. [this was added by my father as he did not want me to be on fast.] However, there is nothing like staying on fast and it is equal to 100 ekAdasi. You may inform Ashrama sishyas suitably. Of course, for mutt sishyas, it is different, as you are aware. Is it at 12 noon for us (munithrayam?) or the next day morning? Regards Namo narayana adiyEn ================================================================== >From Anbil Ramaswamy Dear Sri Madhava Kannan: Upavaasam: Since Thithi is important for Ramavataaram, we have to observe vratham only on Sunday 21st April 2002 when Navami rules for 42-57 nazigais (as per Srirangam koil and Pambu Panchangams of Chitrabanu year). What happens when we observe Upavaasam on this day" Our Acharyan answers: Sree Raama navameem matyaa upOshya sraddhayaa saha / Ekaadasee sathEna aapyam labatE maanava: phalam // (kali santhaara Upanishad quoted by our Acharyan in his book "Ramapiraanai KarpOm" (p252) "Whoever observes Upavaasam with care on that day obtains the fruits of observing a 100 Ekaadasis" Aradhanam: The question as to when we should do Aradhanam has to be decided with reference to the Kataka lagnam which fell on the forenoon of the actual day of His birth Subanu year Chitrai Sukla Paksha navami in the 4th Padam of Punarvasu as given on page 253 of the book. So, I think, Aradhanam can be done in the forenoon. But, this may have to be verified from Ashramam because I do not know when Kataga lagnam starts on 21st April this year. Paaranai: Since Navami ends at 42-57 nazhigai on that day (which means at about midnight i.e after 17 hrs 12 minutes from Sunrise, we may have to do Paranai immediately thereafter(i.e) at midnight. I do not know whether this is advisable because observing Upavaasam the whole day, keeping awake the whole night and doing Paranai the next day are only for Non-Mumukshus as per Ahnika book of H.H. Azhagiyasinghar (p643). H.H. Azhagiyasinghar quotes several PramaaNams from Jaytsena Samhita, Sumanthu etc that Prapannas and Mumukshus have to observe Sri Rama Jayanthi Visesha Aradhanam on Chaitra Suddha navami at Kataga Lagnam and can do ParaNai on completion of the Aradhana, and that doing Paranai after completion of Aradhana will not vitiate the strictures on observing Upavaasam in the case of Mumukshu / Prapanna. (Vide p.641 of his Sri VaishNava Sadaachaara NirNayaM) You may seek clarification from our Acharyan through your father and when you get the reply, please pass it on to me for the guidance of Ashrama Sishyas.
