Guest guest
Respected Swamins/Bhagavathas, Iam giving below some of my reflections on Nammazhwar's paasuram no 1, 2nd pathu, 2nd Tirumozhi. Thinnan veedu mudal muzhuthumai, ENNin Miithiyan emperuman; ........................... The eNN (in Tamil) means (1) to think (2) numeral or counting or Mathematics as seen from Tamil verses like eNNum ezhuththum kannanethagum .. From the books giving the meaning of paasurams it is seen that Nammazhwar refers the countless kalyagunaas of the Lord by the eNNin. The second meaning is Numerals or Sankhya. Sankhya also means right knowledge (samyakh jnana). The sankhya system is predominantly intellectual and theoritical. Yoga means action and tells us how the theory of the Sankhya can be put into practice. Thus Sankhya-Yoga forms one complete system It is also the philosophy of numbers, because it deals with 25 categories or tattvams. It might have influenced the Phythogorian philosophy, because 25 is 5 squared which is 4 squared plus 3 squared. The 25 principles of Sankhya are 1) Moola Prakriti 2)Mahat(Buddhi,intellect) (3) Ahankara (ego, ego-sense) 4to 8 Tanmattraas or transitory states 9to 13 Pancha Bhutaas from tanmattraas (14) Mind 15 to 19 five jnanendriyaas 20 to 24 five karmendriyaas 25.Jeevathma. Thirumazhai Azhwar also refers to the 24 tattvas in his paasurams 3 and 77 of his Thiruchantavrittam Sri Mukkur says in his Kuraiyonrumillai Part II Page 64. From the three that is prakriti, mahat and ahankara, evolved the pancha tanmattraas, pancha Maha Bhutaas, the pancha karmendriyaas, and pancha jnanendriyaas. Manas or mind is above all these tattavaas. The total of these is 24. Jeevathma is the 25th. Paramatma is the 26th. Paramatma says "I am separate from the 24 tattvams and also from the 25th tattvam." Hence Nammazhwar says, "Count 1,2,3 etc or meditate or reflect or contemplate and He will appear". One more interesting point--the letter ma in ohm refers to Jeevaatma, which incidentally is the 25th letter counted from ka, kha, ga, gha etc. Dasan, T.S. Rajagopalan.
