Regards, Malolan Cadambi Austin,TX USA ---------- www.namboothiri.com updates ------ Agnistomam ( Somayaagam ) in 2003 April --------- After a gap if 19 years, an Agnistomam (Somayaagam) is proposed to be conducted at Mulamkunnathkavu in Trissur district in 2003 April. Agnistomam, which uses 12 sastras (defined segments) of Rigveda, was conducted last in 1984 April, at Thiruvananthapuram. An Athiraathram (Agni), which uses 29 sastras, was held in Kundoor (near Trissur), in 1990. As usual for every yaagam, the goals of this yaagam is to cleanse the environment and to keep up this tradition. It is well known that large quantity of fumes arising out of burnt ghee, seeds and vast quantity of appropriate herbals, cleanse the environment. The 2003 yaagam will be conducted by by Vaidikan Thekkat Neelakandan Namboothiri (Edappal, Malappuram district). 48 year old Rigvedic expert Bhatti Puthillath Ramanujan Namboothiri Namboothiri ( popularly known as Aniyan Puthillam ) will perform the yaagam as Yajamaanan. His wife, Dhanya ( daughter of Vettanaattu Paara Mana ) will be the "Pathanaadi". Ramanujan Namboothiri is th son of Bhatti Puthillath Ravi Akkithiripad, the Yajamanan of Kundoor Athiraathram. The Yajamaanan was decided at a simple function held in Sukapuram Dakshinaamoorthy Temple, near Edappal. Sukapuram Dakshinaamoorthy Temple is the Graamam temple (Village temple) of the erstwhile Sukapuram Graamam of Namboothiris. Vaidikan Thekkat Neelakandan Namboothiri is the Vaidikan of this Namboothiri Graamam. The prelude of Yaagam, namely "Thaithireeya Bhasha Chollal " ( defining the yaagam in terms of sastrams and other factors, as per the Thaithireeyam text of Yajurvedam ) was also conducted at the same venue. Rigorous training for the selection of 17 Rithwiks has already begun, for which 34 Rigvedam, Yajurvedam and Saamavedam experts, mostly youngsters & middle aged, are selected. For each post of Rithwik, there would be 2 experts trained. Redundance of trainees is for avoiding a Pula related last-minute-confusion. Rithwiks will be trained in yaagam procedures by the veterans namely, Vaidikan Thaikkat Kesavan Namboothiri, Bhatti Puthillath Ravi Akkithiripad, Kaavapra Maarath Sankaranarayanan Somayaajipad & Naaraas Narayanan Namboothiri. Saamavedam advanced training is being held at Paanjaal, near Trissur district. Preparations are on to procure good quality of Krishnaajinam ( hide of Black Buck or Antelope Cervicarpa or Krishnamrugam ) from North India. Yaagasaala ( the shed with thatched roof ) will be built as per its traditional measures. Wooden and clay pots are also being made as per traditional norms of woods & measurements.
