Dear Smt Gowri

The births and karma of jeevathmas are anAdhi; time immemorial. There is no

beginning of karma. It is like egg and chicken; or seed and tree. bhIjAnkura

nyAyam.

It is like a wheel. Which portion of the wheel is first?

Trust it helps

Nature of soul & Karma

Mon, 03 Feb 2003 10:31:54 +1100

Dear Bagavathas,

In our Sri Sampradaaya it is said that the karma of Bhadha jeevatma is

"anaadhi". Also it is said that our original abode is Vaikuntham & our

Perumal is eagerly waiting for us to get us back like a person who has lost

his ring. Does this mean that once we were pure & had been in touch with

Perumal ( time immemorial back)? If so how did the badha jeevatma gets the

1st karma?

Dear Bhagavathothamas,

Pranaams.

The episodes of Jaya & Vijaya , the Dwarabalakas, who were with Perumal

executing their duties assigned to them were made to take birth in this world as

mortals for specific reasons. There are many such examples where Perumal sends

His Devted Souls who have been with Him for specific purposes. Or Perumal

Himself may like to see His Bhaktas / Nityasuris to again taste the life on

earth for the benefit of other's who need their guidance and thus send scores

of Nityasuris to this world . Azhwars, Acharyas were commanded by Perumal to

take birth and help others get the opportunity to get their Sambandham so that

they can make more Souls return to Him. It seems to be an unfathomable sea by

which the MAAYAN i.e Perumal sends so many souls to return to earth by His Will.

For, once a soul reaches Vaikunta there is no scope for its getting bound by

Karma.

If it all a soul, which has been with Perumal in Sri Vaikunta, returns and takes

birth in this world, it should be the Will of Peruaml only and not bcos of any

Karma.

There are excellent reviews of Kausitaki Upanishad

which sheds light on this issue:

Some times we see great realized souls behaving

in a disappoint way or a very poor soul exhibiting

a shimmer of greatness.

The Upanishads ground a pantheistic perspective on

Ultimate Reality and introduce karma as explanation of

human suffering. The only true substance of the

universe is Brahman, so that evil cannot be real.

Ignoring the one and only reality of Brahman launches

karma into action and therefore brings suffering to

the soul in further lives. Although it is difficult to

determine the very beginning of karma’s manifestation,

a text in Kausitaki Upanishad (3,8) indicates that

Brahman himself causes the good and evil done by

humans, and so he must be the one responsible for the

origin of karma:

He (Brahman) causes him whom he wishes to lead up from

these worlds to perform good action. This one, indeed,

also causes him whom he wishes to lead downward, to

perform bad action.

As the manifestations and dissolutions of the world

are eternal, so is karma, meaning that suffering is a

part of the eternal cosmic cycle. Logically then, the

ultimate origin of karma must be in Brahman, because

he is the source of any manifestation and the origin

of souls. Man cannot be considered guilty for the evil

in the world, not even for his own bad deeds, because

all of them originated in past lives, of which he

cannot be aware. Suffering in the present life is the

natural consequence of past lives’ ignorance and it

has to be endured without questioning.

may we never be separated from Brahman
