Guest guest
Pranam, This is my first post to the list. Dr. Radhakrishnan, in his book Indian Philosophy, Volume II, makes this curious statement about Acarya Ramanuja: "Out of deference to tradition he concedes that freedom is open only to the three upper classes, and others will have to work their way up and wait for the next birth." (p. 709) 1. Is this a correct reading? If so can someone please point to the section of the Sri Bhasya where he said this? 2. If it is true how does it reconcile with the worship of the Alwars, some of whom were Sudras? Thanking all of the learned members in advance! Guest guest
Dear Vikram ji, It is said in Sribhasya that Sudras can not do Bakthias it is said only for tri-varnikaas thats is bhramins kshatriyas and vaisyas.. THIS IS ALSO THE OPINION OF SANKARACHARYA ALSO. But every one can do PRAPATTI by surendreing him self to a ACHARYA. so swami RAMANUJA ha sstated though not openly, in sri basya. SWAMI DESIKA has reitereted this in his works.to quote one ANthaNar Anthiyar Ellaiyil niNdra aNaithhulagum nonthavare mudalaga nudangiya nanneriyaayi...... So ALL can perform PRAPATIand attain moksha so worshipping of ALWARS IS NOT wrongas they are mukthas kaasyapah "Vikram Masson <vikrammasson" <vikrammasson wrote: Pranam, This is my first post to the list. Guest guest
Srimathey Nigamaantha Maha Desikaya Namaha Swami Desika refers to the 10 azhwars as naveena dasavataram. They are the new age incarnations of the Lord Himself. Hence there is nothing wrong in worshipping Them. Since we worship the Lord in any form including fish, tortoise, rhino(contrary to the common perception of boar), man-lion etc., there is nothing wrong in worshipping the ten azhwars as the Lord Himself. Moreover, according to the adiyarkkadiyaarkkadiyar concept, since the azhwars were all considering themselves as adiyaars, we can worship them(even if we don't consider them as incarnations of the Lord). Every Bhagavata should also give respect to other Bhagavatas. So even under this principle, great Bhagavatas like the azhwars may be worshipped. The debate as to whether they can be considered as acharyas and whether there can be mixed marriages is different. If required, we can deal with those topics separately.
