Guest guest
Respected Sir : Very interesting and quite logically put. The writer would like to add somethings. 1. When you say the word "oordhvam" means upward there is an additoinal meaning. As per the most ancient Yogic concepts the body has 7 chakra or points. Some of you must already have heard of these. The chakras typically start from the bottom i.e. Mooladhara the central point between the genitials and anus and keep on proceeding upward culminating in the 7th Chakra Sahasra i.e. 1000 peteled in the center of the head. The second last chakra Ajna is between the eyebrows in the center inside right in the middle just below the Sahasra. This is one of the most critical chakras which has lot of esoteric references etc. If one tries to recollect during any ritual, Sandhyavandanam, while reciting the Shuklam Bharadaram Vishnum, one taps with knuckles the two temples, actually one is supposed to tap slightly above the eye brows closer and not away at the sides above the ears. The reason is inside this the divine nectar is supposed to reside and the tapping is sybolic of : a. tapping the normally sluggish brain to become alert b. acupressure/acupunture points : these are similar to "marma" points on the elephent which when tapped or activated will result in the desired action. There are nerve endings which when activated will start generating signals and tune themselves to the divine (above) frequencies. Under normal circumstances these are dormant in all. c. to ensure that the divine nectar indeed drops. Imagine, an ear drop or wax remover which we commonly use. We have to take the nozzle close to the ears and apply pressure to the soft cap of the bottle so that the liquid flows in a small drop into the ears. In the same way by tapping we are invoking the inner nozzle to let drop a wee bit nectar. Once this nectar drops it goes into the throat from the epiglotis and starts activating us. Therefore application of such holy, divine symbols like the Oordvam, etc. are upward and not downward. 2. Further if one observes while the downward position of the adoration is closed, finite, both the upward lines are indefinite and point to infinity symbolising that beyond the Sahasra is the real and this cannot be measured or fathomed. The bottom of the Lord's feet softly affording a tree-like strong umbrella with the upper portion hidden in the mystic invisible cosmos is another important signifcance of the upward tilt. The application of Chandan/Sandal also is to ensure that the chakra and surroundings are cooler and not heated up.
