Respected Sir :

Day before yesterday, a 57 year old very weak and unhealthy lady was

admitted to a local hospital at Chembur, Bombay. She was ina bad shape with

drug-induced hepatitis and had literally shriveled up. This writer

personally witnessed both her sick state and the improved state when she

started recovering at the Hospital.

While certainly some part of the recovery may be due to the medicines, diet

and rest, the other part which is the most significant part is your

connection with her recovery.

How is this so you may wonder? You do not know her name, age, background

etc. still how are you connected?

The fact that you have shown initial keenness in the Sandhya itself has

benefited someone somewhere. You may or may not be related to this person,

but the benefit is showered.

PLEASE BELIEVE THIS WRITER AND DO NOT DOUBT/QUESTION THE ABOVE.

To come to your specific queries.

Regarding Pranayama, DO NOT STUDY AND LEARN FROM BOOKS, VCD, VIDEO,

CASSETTE ETC.

Check out whether you have a family priest. Learn from him. Alternatively,

identify a good temple nearby and find out orthodox visitors or people who

are elderly and who seem/appear to have some spiritual inclination. They

too can teach

Learning is only through the time-tested ancient Vedic method of Sharavanam

and Manannam i.e. listen and memorising.

Please inform where are you located ? In India or abroad? This writer will

try to get more details once this information is available

PRANAYAMA IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST OFFERING During Sandhya. Do not bother

about Yogic methods. Right now learn to do the whole thing regularly.

Do not attempt ratios and holding breath etc.

In these matters you must adopt the concept of Bhavana or pretention. Your

entire mental faculties must be focussed on

a single point of saying the prayers correctly. The external, physical

ritual is of little importance. Ensure that your thoughts are not on your

office, career, family problems, sickness of near/dear, or some worry on

children's exam marks, an upcoming meeting etc. Just isolate yourself

mentally and concentrate on the Gayathri and Om Bhu Om Bhuv etc.

The attitude is critical. One of the most favourite devoutees of Lord

Shiva - who is considered a Nayanmar, the equivalent of an Alwar - is

Kannaiappan. He was a crude, illitrate hunter whose sole purpose was to

kill. Due to some circumstances, he had to worship the Lord. He performed

the Abhishekam - and everyone knows Lord Shiva likes nothing better than a

good bath !. Give a good Abhishekam and you have Shiva at your doorstep.

Now the Puranams have authoratitively mentioned that this particular hunter

performed Abhishekam with water flowing from his mouth i.e. his spittle.

Still he was so deeply sincere that he was absolutely unaware of his act.

Imagine the extent to which this man's crude knowledge had developed. He

could not differentiate between clean and uncleanliness. He was so low in

knowledge but very high in Para Bhakti ie. intoxicated Bhakti. Lord Shiva

was thoroughly pleased and showed HIMSELF and blessed this man and gave him

a place as Shiva's worthiest disciple.

Therefore, just pretend to do Pranayama. Hold your outer nostril LIGHTLY.

Do not press or block the nostrils. Breath normally. Close the eyes and

start mentally chanting Om Bhu om Bhuv, Om Suvah etc.BREATH NORMALLY. Just

do like most of us are doing. Act. Do not bother about exact methods. Just

do a light act. But keep your heart in this act.

Put your entire soul into it.

Do not attempt things with breathing without learning from a qualified

person and practicing for long. Pranayama is full of benefits and also full

of pitfalls.

Just remember the slogan of Nike : JUST DO IT

Srimathe Ramanujaye Nama:

Read the article on sandhya vandhanam , really excited to know about the

nithya karma.Upanayanam was done to me at the age of 26 years ( 3 year ago)

..I hope as per shastra it should be done before 16 years.OK it the parents

responsiblility to do it on the correct age. However i was doing my nithya

karma intermittently , but for the past three months i am doing sandhya

vandhanam regularly.i feel the difference.

I have a doubt on doing pranayama.i am following the LIFCO book for doing

sandhya vandhanam.(Since my elders are not practicing the karma and no one

is avilable for guiding me). It says the air to be exhaled thro right

nostrile.and inhaled thro left. Then chant the mantra Om Bhu: to Brhma

burBhuvasvarom 3 times. then exhale thro right nostrile and press right

ear.

But recently i have purchased a book Sandhyavandhana Bhashyam by Anna

(Ramakrishna Mission). It says while inhaling chant the mantra Om bhu: to

thathsvavidhur varenyam.(purakam).by holding the breath chant from Om Abaha

to Brhma burBhuvasvarom and Om Bhu: to Brhma burBhuvasvarom (kumbakam),

and while exhaling thro right nostrile chant from Om Bhu: to Brhma

burBhuvasvarom (rechakam). that is to follow 1:3:2 ratio of patanjali

yoga.

Which one to follow ?. Can any one guide me on this
