Guest guest Posted October 20, 2003 Report Share Posted October 20, 2003 Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, Nowadays, I enjoy the paasurams of mudhal thiruvandhaathi [MT] more, thanks to sri T.Maadhavan swamy of triplicane who provided that 'required initial spark'. With that the 'krishNa enjoyment light' is burning. I want to share that 'simple joy of enjoying my kaNNan' through MT with you all. That is the very purpose of this write up. We saw kaNNan paNNina maayam in that aalilai episode in previous 3 posts. Let us now see that maayan as 'vaamana-varaahan' [again in a pair of paasurams]. paasuram 21: ninRu nilamangai neer ERRu moovadiyaal senRu dhisai aLandha sengaNmaaRku enRum padaiyaazhi puLLoordhi paambaNaiyaan paadham adaiyaazhi nenjE aRi Summing up the word by word commentary from 'prabhandha rakshai' of Sri Uththamoor Veera raaghavaachaar swamy - it runs like this:- "kadal pOnRa manamE, * maavaliyidaththiRku nadanthu, * yaachiththu ninRu, * azhagiya thiruk kaiyilE kodai neeraip peRRu, * moonRu adigaLaalE boomiyaiyum dhikkugaLaiyum aLandhu koNdarulinavanum, senthaamaraik kaNNanum aana vyaamOham uLLavanukku, eppozhudhum thiruvaazhiyaanadhu aayudhamaam. periya thiruvadi vaahanamaam. thiruvananthaazhvaanaip padukkaiyaagavudaiya avanadhu thiruvadigaLai adaivaayaaga, therindhu koLvaayaaga." [in this the bulleted points refer the vaamana to thrivikrama transformation.] the second paasuram - 84: piraan un perumai piRar aar aRivaar uraayulagaLantha gnaanRu varaagaththu yeiRRaLavu pOdhaavaaRenkolO endhai adikku aLavu pOntha padi Summing up the word by word commentary from 'prabhandha rakshai' of Sri Uththamoor Veera raaghavaachaar swamy - it runs like this:- "upakaaraganE, * nee ulaavi lOkangaLai ellaam aLandha naaLilE en appanaana unnudaiya thiruvadiyin aLavukkup porundhina boomiyaanadhu * varaahamaai avadhariththa unadhu kOttin aLavukku pOdhaamal irundha vagai [kuRaindhirundha padi] edhanaalO? unadhu mEnmaiyai bhakthar neengalaaga vERu yaar thaam aRiya vallaar?" [again the bulleted portions refer the 'gigantic varaaha' and 'thrivikrama' episodes of the maayams of my kaNNan]. Some specials: 1. These are andhaadhi paasurams - means the last word of the previous paasuram becomes the first word of the next paasuram. Instead consider the reverse - the aadhi and andham of the same paasuram. if you place together this aadhi antham together, then some very interesting line up is there. Consider verses 19, 20 21 and 22 of MT - they read * maalum - peRRu, -19 * peRRaar - ninRu, -20 * ninRu - aRi, -21 * aRi - thazhumbu -22 - each is a beauty here. * maal means thirumaal - another meaning is mayakkam intoxication -inebriate- or kaadhal love - maalum peRRu - means andha thirumaalaip paRRina mayakkam peRRu - intoxicated with the thoughts of that maal - sriman naaraayaNan, * peRRavar ninRu - niRRal does not literally mean standing but thinking, so one who got that intoxication started thinking about that sriman naaraayaNan * ninRavar aRinthu - those who thought - realised, * aRindhvar peRRadhu thazhumbu - the realised gotthe stamp - what it is - that maalin adiyaar ennum thazhumbu - stamp - scar - adaiyaaLam of maalin adiyaar ena - recognition as naaraayaNa dhaasan. ninRavar aRindhathu enna - to answer that - go back and take paasuram 21of MT - sengaNmaaRku - what are identities of that naaraayaNan and the real way to reach him. * padai -aazhi - weaponry - discus * oordhi - puL - vehicle - garudan - the bird * aNai - paambu - bed - snake - ananthan * paambu aNaiyaan paadham adai - reach the feet of that lord who lies in snake bed. 2. another common specialty point in these two paasurams is [21and 84]: these two paasurams cover both the varaaham and thrivikraman episodes. Perhaps if I say that you may say it is wrong. From the commentary given above, We have already seen and it is clear that the vaamanan episode only is covered in paasuram 21. Whereas 84 covers both [bulleted above in the summing up for clarity sake]. Now comes the real enjoyment - after doing some - anvayam - rearranging the words of the paasuram - 21 to cover both varaaham and vaamanan episodes. Take the first two lines of the paasuram and do the 'anvayam' - lines read - "ninRu nilamangai neer ERRu moovadiyaal senRu dhisai aLandha sengaNmaaRku". anvayam 1. 'nilam ninRu am kai neer ERRu moovadiyaal senRu dhisai aLandha sengaNmaaRku' - this covers the vaamana to thrivikrama - giving meaning - standing on the earth, accepted the water offering with the beautiful hands [made by mahaabali the king], then with three gigantic steps went ahead and measured all the directions - to that red eyed thirumaal" - [already available as above] anvayam 2. 'neer ninRu nilamangai ERRu, senRu moovadiyaal dhisai aLandha sengaNmaaRku'. This covers both varaaha and thrivikrama - "standing in water and lifted up the bhoomi dhEvi, went and with three steps measured all the directions - to that red eyed thirumaal". For we all know, that varaaha - the great boar stood in water, when the earth was immersed in water, caused by the asura hiranyaaksha and killed him retrieved the earth on his horn. Now, you, all, will agree yes - this paasuram covers both varaha and vaaman avathaara episodes. neer - water, neer - another meaning - you [second person singular and plural- with a lot of respect - neer, neengaL, neevir] nila mangai - bhoomi dhEvi - [this title to bhoomaa dhEvi is used by thirumangai aazhvaar frequently- eg 4-5 periya thirumadal- nilamangai thannai muRainaaL aLavitta thaamarai pOl manniya sEvadiyai says T aazhvaar] nilam + am + kai = nilamangai - earth, beautiful hand [that is the meaning used above] ERRu [ERRudhal] - lift up, carry up, pulling to top by standing on top, [a simple 'water pump' is called neeRERRu iyandhiram in thooya thamizh] ERRu [koLLudhal] - ERRuk koLLudhal - accepting, taking what is given or offered. enRum padai aazhi - always the weapon is the discus - sudharsanar puL oordhi - the vehicle is the bird- garudan paambu aNai - the snake is the bed aazhiyaan paadham adai - reach the feet of the lord who is reposing in the ocean aRi nenjE - hey mind - learn that. That is why the title of this write up is vaamaana varaahan. Even this varaahan was only a vaamanan - small in size initially, and, then grew into that large size to lift the earth - that is beautifully described in naaraayaNeeyam - angushtamaathravapuruthpathitha: purasthaadh BhooyO~tha kumBhisadhrusa: samajrumBhathhaasthvam| aBhrE thathhaa viDhamudheekshya Bhavanthamuchchai rvismErathaam vidhiragaatha sahasoonuBhi: svai: || meaning: Of the size of the thumb at the time of emergence [from brahmaa's nose] thou didst soon grew to a size of an elephant. Seeing thee thus growing up to region of clouds brahmaa along with his offspring looked on thee with wonder. iththham vichinthyathi Dhaathri sailamaathra sadhyou Bhavan kila jagarjithha gOragOram | meaning: While brahmaa was wondering who is this - you grew to the size of mountain. So the vaamana varaaha grew to thrivikrama size that is what is being wondered in MT 84. Special 3: in P 21 of MT the ending is aazhi nenjE aRi - hey mind learn or know or realise. In 84 - it is 'piraan un perumai piRar aar aRivaar' - this mind who has realised and got that stamp - thazhumbu can only recognise him as 'piraan' - the great of this vaaman varaahan. Special 4. In vaamana to thrivikrama the earth is measured with one foot. Whereas the earth was lifted on the horn tip. Which is big- to measure what is the scale - earth? See line ulagu aLandha gnaanRu endhai adikku aLavu pOndhapadi enkolO? varaagaththu eyiRRaLavu pOgaavaaRu endhai adikku aLavu pOndha padi enkolO? [aLavu - scale aLavu - measurement] As stated by UV swamy one time the earth is adequately enough, another time it is not enough.
