In Mahabharatha, during Sandhya times they stopped the war and did sandhya vnadhana and when water was not available they used dust. In fact, after sandya vnadhana, we shoud do Thiru Ashtakshara mantra jabam also ( those who have got initiation on samasranam.) Adiyen, A. Actually according to little bit of knowledge I have gained we do not derive any Punya by performing Sandhyavandhana but it adds to the Papa by not performing it. Sandhyavandhana is indeed one of our nithya karma and we should ensure we follow it properly.
