Dear Bhagavathas,

Couple of other ways of looking at the significance of 108:

Our body is considered a city with 9 gates

(nava dwAre purE dEhi). Number 108 could mean seeking year round (dwAdasha mAsAA

samvatsarah: 12 months in a year)protection of the 9 gates (12X9=108).

Also there are 27 naxatrAs(Ashvini to rEvati), each divided into 4 quarters

(pAdAs)making up to 27X4=108.

Ms. Vatsala,

One way to look at 1008 significance is as follows:

There are 7 outer limits or paridhis and 21 inner limits within which we live as

per puruSHa sUktam (saptAsyAsan paridhayah, trissapta samidah kRetAh). Together

they make up 7+21=28

Seven outer limits are:

(Five elements: Earth, water, wind, fire, space; together with day and night.

These govern our 7 outer limits).

The 21 inner limitsare:

5 jnAnEndriyams (ability to see, taste, touch, hear and smell);

5 karmEndriyams (to grasp, to walk, to speak,to pee and to poop)

5 vital breats (prANa, apAna, vyAna, udAna and smAna)

4 inner subtleties (antahkaraNam): mind (manah), intellect (buddhih), ego

(ahankAram), and consciences (chittam)

2 inclinations: dharmam (Good inclinations)

and adharmam (bad inclinations)

We lead our life yagna relentlessly

(nahi kaschit xaNamapi jAtu tiSHTatyakarma kRet- as per BhagavadgItA) year

around (12 months- dwAdasha mAsAh samvatsarah).

We are always under the influence of three gUNas

sattva, rajas and tamas(trai guNya vishyA vEda- as per BhagavadgItA).

Thus: 28 (paridhis)x12(months)x3(guNas)=1008

I am sure there are 1008 other ways of looking at this!

dAsan,
