Dear raama bhakthaas,

We have seen in previous post how vaali’s birth happened. Now we will see what

is his physical power and might. Already in the vaalmeeki’s slOkam referred

earlier, we saw he is like mount mahEndhra. [see the word indhra appearing even

in comparison, for he is indhran’s amsam]

vaaali's power was so much, that, at the time of churning the milk ocean for

amirtham, the nectar, with mandhara hill as the churning rod, vaasuki as the

rope, he went to help churning. He started churning with his two mighty arms by

catching the vaasuki both by head and tail. With his might the mountain became

a simple churning rod in curd pot, says poet Kamban in his raamaayaNam. See

verse below.

mandhara neduvarai maththu vaasugi

andham il kadai kayiRu adaikal aazhiyaan

chandhiran thooN edhir tharukkin vaangunar

indhiran mudhaliya EnaiyOr

– 26 vaali vadhaip padalam kitkindhaa kaaNdam

[nedu varai – is the big hill,

andham il – mudivu illaadha – without end – means such a long snake vaasugi is

the rope to churn

adaikal – the base supporting stone is - aazhiyaan

– aazhi means discuss the wheel – one who has the wheel in his hand – the

bhagavaan vishNu who holds a discuss. aazhi also mean the ocean or the ocean

king himself who supports as well being churned.

– [but since we know very well vishNu went as a koorma roopi and gave his

back to support the mount mandhara while churning, we can take it as meaning

vishNu only]

– chandhran the moon is the pillar against which this churning rope is

supported

– persons in the opposite ends are indhran et al – indhran father of

vaali]

peyarvuRa valikkavum midukku il peRRiyaar

ayarvuRal uRRadhai nOkki yaan adhu

thayir enak kadaindhu avarkku amudham thanthadhu

mayil iyal kuyil mozhi maRakkal aavadhO

- 27 vaali vadhaip padalam kitkindhaa kaaNdam

[seeing these people are getting tired, vaali just took the rope and started

churning the milk ocean just like the curd pot and got the amudham – nectar.

– since this verse is addressed to thaaraa his wife while she persuades

him not to go to fight with his younger one, he says

– hey taara – my dear wife – how can you forget such incidents about your

husband].

See another verse:

kazhaRu dhEvarOdu avuNar kaNNin ninRu

uzhalum mandharaththu uruvu thEya mun

azhalum thOL araa agadu theevida

suzhalum vElaiyaik kadaiyum thOLinaan

- 38 natpukkOtpadalam – kitkindhaa kaaNdam

While sugreevan is seeking raamaa’s introduction and telling about his plight

etc sugreevan expresses about vaali as above. Same incident of dhEvaas and

asuraas joining together and churning the milk ocean and at that time vaali

helped to make it easy the churning with his physical might. “Such a strong

vaali is my brother’ says sugreevan to raamaa.

Yet another verse:

neeRu aam mEruvum nee nerukkinaal

maaRu oR vaaLi un maarbai eervadhO?

ThEREn yaan idhu dhEvar maayamO?

VERu Or vaali kolaam viLindhuLaan.

- 14 thaarai pulambal padalam kitkindhaa kaaNdam

See here the words of thaaraa who says ‘the mount mEru will also become powder

if you crush it. Then how can such a powerful person be beaten down by a single

arrow, is it a wonder from the dhEvaas?’

Needless to mention here that raavaNan became the friend of such a powerful

vaali. For raavaNan was tied in the tail of vaali and while vaali flew in the

air, poor raavaNan was hanging afraid of his life. Also raavaNan was afraid of

vaali’s other boon or power of taking away to himself the 50% power of the

person whomsoever is standing opposing him in war.

This capacity of vaali is also said by sugreeva to raama while the friendship

agreement is being signed in front of a fire. See verse

meikkoL vaalinaal midal iraavaNan

thokka thOL uRaththdarp paduththa naaL

pukkilaadhavum pozhi araththa neer

ukkilaadha vERu ulagam yaavadhO?

- 48 natpukkOt padalam – kitkindhaa kaaNdam

That midal raavaNan – powerful fellow was – vaalinaal thokka – hanging in tail.

Such was vaali’s power. [of course if you really see in vaalmeeki raamaayaNam

there is no evidence for this version of churning of milk ocean when vaali

helped etc. Kamban would not have inserted in his work if there is no evidence.

So knowledgeable bhakthaas can quote references / evidence for this version

included here].
