Guest guest
Dear raama bhakthaas, In the previous 2 posts we saw the three facets of vaali, the human, the monkey and the divine as given by kamban. Now we will see a comparison between vaali sugreevan and karNan arjunan. Perhaps few may have a doubt why these two pairs of people have to be compared. The explanation is as below. In sreemadh raamaayaNam [sR hereafter] Vaali is the son of dhEvendhran or indhran's amsam and the elder brother. Sugreevan is son of sooryan or sooryan's amsam and the younger brother. In sree maahaa bhaaratham [MB hereafter] KarNan is the son of sooryan or sooryan's amsam, and the elder brother. Arjunan is the son of dhEvEndhran or indhran's amsam and the younger brother. Which means the elder in previous order [sR] became younger later [in MB]. That is why a comparison of these four characters is worth considering, in particular the death of the elders in both pairs. First let us some of the concurrences and then the conflicts if any between these two pairs: 1. In both SR and MB, the supreme lord helped the young one only. The supreme lord raama helped the younger one sugreevan, among these two brothers in SR. The supreme lord krishNa helped the younger one arjunan among these two brothers in MB. [viz. the young ones are the pets to the lord, it appears]. 2. In both SR and MB, the younger brother's wives were the cause for the trouble or fight between the two sets of brothers. In SR, rumaa, the wife of sugreevan, since was snatched away by the elder, the trouble between the brothers began. That also became the main reason for the death of elder brother as said by raamaa. In MB, the elder brother and his party caused damage to the modesty of dhroupathi [the wife of arjunan] and thereby that became the cause of his death also. [may be the elder brother karNan was not directly responsible for that, but he was a party when the damage to the lady was done. Also karNan since continued in dhuryOdhanan's party till his last moment he has to pay for the sin committed on account of this lady]. 3. In both SR and MB the young ones only called the shots - viz. initiated the war first. In SR, sugreevan went and called vaali for a fight and got him killed. In MB, the young one arjuna initiated the war since elder and his team led by dhuryOdhanan refused the kingdom which lead to war. Finally karnan was killed. 4. In both cases the young ones were roaming without a place to reside or rule on their own. in SR, sugreevan was roaming in rishyamukha parvatham away from the kingdom kishkindha. In MB, arjunan and brothers were in viraata nagaram. From there only all initiatives for a war started. 5. Both the elders took the wrong side of friendship. In SR vaali took the friendship of raavanan. May be putting it the other way may sound better and a bit more logical, raavaNan since was afraid of vaali took vaali as a friend. [somehow vaali was in the wrong company of raavaNan] In MB karNan took the friendship of dhuryOdhanan from the beginning. When truth about his birth secrets were told to him by none other than the supreme lord, my krishNa, he did not come out of the clutches of his old friendship which finally lead to his death. 6. Both the elders knew their route is adharmam but tried to justify with reasons. In SR vaali argues with the lord that it is the monkey's nature, animal instincts, to live in any way even by snatching brother's wives. In MB karNan knows that his friend is doing a wrong thing but says I am tied up and can not come out of the bond or binding, because of my 'senchORRuk kadan' - for having eaten together and or having taken a kingdom as a gift from friend. 7. The natural law or Dharmam took a back seat in both cases. In a dual between two in SR, vaali and sugreevan, raamaa from behind entered and killed, which is not dharma yudhdham. IN MB karNan was trying to lift the wheel of the chariot and at that time he was killed at the instance of krishNa, thereby the dharmam of not attacking a niraayudhapaaNi took a back seat. 8. Both the elders who were killed, knew who is the main instrument in their getting killed - the supreme lord raama and Krishna. In SR vaali even praises raama and seeks 2 boons from the lord, as we have already seen by way of kamban's verses. In MB karnan gets a visvaroopa dharsanam of the lord before his final moments and knew well who he is. 9. There was a highly knowledgeable person in the side of the young one in both pairs of brothers. In SR hanumaan was with sugreevan to help him in times where good counseling is needed. IN MB vidhuran, the highly knowledgeable, was a helper and sympathizer to arjunan, though physically was there in the other camp. 10. In both cases of the killing of the elders, it raised a lot of sympathy with the elder and that is why we discuss this topic even today. In SR vaali vadham is a controversial topic. In MB karNan's character itself is a sympathy creator and his killing is some thing, which brings tears to the eyes immediately. 11. Both the young ones afterwards relent very much for having killed the elder or having been the main reason for the elder's killing. In SR sugreevan immediately relents. IN MB arjunan and brothers relents very much once they come to know karNan is their elder having realized that through their mother's act. Now let us see few of the conflicts or differences in these two instances of killing of the elders. 1. The friendship or relationship between the supreme lord and the young ones were in 2 different ways. In SR the supreme lord raama went in search of sugreevan and made friendship with him. In MB arjunan went for the sakhyam of krishNa. [of course krishNan was available to arjunan easily]. 2. The supreme lord did not do the killing of elders in both cases. In SR, the elder was killed at the hands of the supreme lord - raama - DIRECTLY. IN MB, since the supreme lord krishNa had the vow of not touching the weapon, he got karNan killed through arjuna. 3. Different ways in killing the elders. In SR raama was hiding and shooting the arrow from behind a tree. This was completely different in the case of karNan. The lord was in the front, riding the chariot of arjunan and he was the person to advise arjunan to shoot karNan at that moment of karNan;s lifting the wheel of his chariot. I hereby request bhakthaas to join in listing out few more concurrences and conflicts, [if something is missed out in the list above] for the enjoyment of the mercy of the supreme lord raama and krishNa by one and all. with due respects v.anjaneyulu, itarsi
