Srimathi Venkatachari Raghavan 'Village on Wheels' Four out of five packages offered by Indian Railways' Village on Wheels, a common man's version of its prestigious luxury train Palace on Wheels, will link Bihar's capital to domestic tourist hubs. The first of Village on Wheels will begin its maiden journey from the suburbs of Patna at Rajendra Nagar on Nov 29, the railway ministry said Wednesday. "The Village On Wheels seeks to enable common man to travel round the country to promote domestic tourism and to unify our people further," an official statement said. The first package tour of nine days would cost Rs.4,500 inclusive of food, refreshments, tea or coffee, and sightseeing at important centres of religious, cultural and historical places. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad will flag off its maiden run at 8.00 a.m. on Nov 29 at Rajendra Nagar. The first Village On Wheels train will pass through Patna, Varanasi, Agra, Mathura, Delhi Safdarjung, Jammu Tawi (Vaishno Devi), Amritsar, Haridwar (Rishikesh), Patna and back to Rajendra Nagar. The Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), the tourism wing of Indian Railways, the largest network under a single management, has arranged with tour operators to market and manage comprehensive services including sightseeing, catering and allied activities at various places. Besides medical facilities on board, the Village on Wheels will have a banker and safe vaults to enable passengers to keep their money in safe custody while travelling. Including the pantry car, the Village On Wheels will have eight coaches. The second package for six days would commence journey on Dec 10 from Patna and pass through Mokama, Jasidih, Asansol, Bardhaman, Howrah, Puri, Howrah, and Asansol to return to Bihar's capital. Repeat trips will commence on Dec 19, Dec 28, and Feb 2. The third tour of 12 days will begin on Jan 5 from Howrah and pass through Patna, Manmad (Shirdi), Pune, Mumbai, Ahmedaba, Dwarka, Verawal, Ajmer, Jaipur, Delhi, Patna and back to Howrah. In the fourth package, the Village On wheels will operate on the route covering Patna, Howrah, Puri, Tirupati, Madurai, Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari, Trivandrum, Ernakulam, and Howrah, and back to Patna from Jan 19-30. The last package would see the Village on Wheels train operate to Ajmer Sharif during Urs Mela from different originating points of the country.
