Tradition followed at our home (AdiyEn share this to

learn more)

Bhogi - Burning of old things before sun-rise. Since

Bhogi also signifies AndAl KalyAnam, it celebrated at

homes with special Thaligai for ThiruvAradhanam,

including making Poli.

Pongal (Welcoming UttarAyana Punya KAlam) - Early

morning Sugar Cane is tied at the entrance, with

Mavilai (Mango leaves) thOranam.

Two Pongal panai nicely adorned with flowers, root

ginger, root turmeric and Thiruman Kaapu are placed

facing east at an auspicious time (this time btw 9am

to 10am in India). One of them to cook white rice

(Suddha Annam for ThiruvAradhanam) and another has

white rice mixed with dal (PAsi payaru) for making

White Pongal and Sakarai Pongal. An assortment of

chips (Sweet potato, plantain, Yam) are also made.

And Kadambam is also made.

When the pot froths, bells are sounded as if to

welcome "God" into our homes, and soon after the food

is prepared it is offered at ThiruvAradhanam

(BhojyAsanam). Before BhojyAsanam at AlankArasanam,

new clothes are offered (traditionally Dhoties,

Sarees) to the Divya Dhampathis, which are later

accepted as PrasAdham. After BhojyAsanam, at Punar

MantrAsanam, fruits including sugarcane, banana are

offered along with flowers & Thamboolam to the Divya

Dhampathism. This followed by Satthumurai (without

Divya Prabandham at home), reciting of AchArya Taniyan

& offering SambhAvanai.

After ThiruvAradhanam, the new clothes are worn,

blessings are taken from parents/elders at home,

PrasAdham is consumed, and proceed to go to temples

and relatives.

On Kanu - Early morning, kalantha satham is made and

offered in ThiruvAradhanam (Puliyora, Coconut rice,

Lemon rice, Thadhiyannam). This plus coloured rice

from previous days suddha annam and the Chakarai

pongal prasadam are neatly arranged on Ginger and

Turmeric leaves by ladies in the house, including

daughters who visit the parents on this day.

Additionally they place Thamboolam, Flowers, fruits to

the birds, and offer Neerajanam. If there are cows

at home, they are also worshipped in a similar manner,

plus adorning them with new bells, annointing them

with sandal paste, plus feeding them Jaggery, banana

etc takes place. Daughters who visit their parents

are offered sambavanai on this day.
