Guest guest
dear bhagavathas, i would like to know why marriages are not performed for people in the same gotra. 1) do gotras apply to non-brahmin followers of vedic system ? 2) does it apply to dvija bandhus ? 3) are there any allowed exceptions ? 4) are there vedic mantras chanted during marriage that need the use of gotras ? best regards rajaram v. Guest guest
>>1) do gotras apply to non-brahmin followers of vedic system ? << Every human being is thought to be descended from one ReSHi or the other. All the gotras trace back to one or the other of the sapta ReSHis. (There are some variations on the names of sapta ReSHis). For example , I belong to SHaThamarSHaNa gotra who is of Angirasa (one of the saptaReSHis) lineage. >>2) does it apply to dvija bandhus ? << I don't understand what you mean by here. It applies to all. Brahmins seem to recall the gotra more often than others. Srivastav, a common last name among kAyasthAs is supposed to be referring to theit gothra (Srivatsa gotra). >>3) are there any allowed exceptions ?<< Strictly speaking marriage between people of same gotra is barred. This has a genetic basis. Marrying in close blood lines is not good as it may result in having progeny with double dosage of bad genes. It amounts to in-breeding a sopposed to cross-breeding. However, even people of same gotra are far removed, so thi sshould not be a big problem anymore. It is even common among many to marry sister's daughter or maternal uncle's daughter. >>4) are there vedic mantras chanted during marriage that need the use of gotras ? << Yes during pravaram, just before kanyadanam. Name of Gothra followed by names of father, grand father and great grand father of bride and likewise for bride groom are recounted. dAsan K.S.tAyAchAr Rajaram Venkataramani <v_raja_ram Tue, 5 Apr 2005 05:03:17 -0700 (PDT) sa gotram dear bhagavathas, i would like to know why marriages are not performed for people in the same gotra. 1) do gotras apply to non-brahmin followers of vedic system ? 2) does it apply to dvija bandhus ? 3) are there any allowed exceptions ? 4) are there vedic mantras chanted during marriage that need the use of gotras ? best regards rajaram v.
