This Pasuram refers to refers to VIBHAVAM

 

Ongi: grew so tall

ulagu: the three world(s)

aLandha: as to measure

Uththaman: the best, the highest One who

pEr paadi: Let us sing the name of Trivikrama

 

Why VAMANA is invoked?

It is Vamana who released the flow of water by pricking the hole in

the ' Gindi ' vessel.

As they were apparently praying for rains, it was appropriate to

invoke one who facilitated free flow of water by removing impediments.

 

This is the only Avataram that is mentioned extensively in the Vedas.

Cf:

" idam vishNur vichakramE, trEdaa nidatE padam

samooDamsya paagumsurEh svaaha/ idam na mama//"

 

A "TWO-IN-ONE" AVATAARAM!

This actually is a "two-in-one" Avataram. Vyuhantaram mentions

both "Trivikrama" and "Vaamana" in the same breath Vide Achamana

kramam beginning with Achyutaaya Namah and ending with "daamOdaraaya

namah"

 

It is in TirukkOvilur (also known as Gopalapuram) that the Lord got

his first 3 songs by Mudal Azhwaars in the Mudal, Irandaam and

Moonraam Tiruvantaadis

 

Why UTTHAMAN?

• One who harms others and also harms himself in the process is

Adha Adhaman (Worst of the Worst);

• One who harms others but gains thereby is Adhaman (Worse);

• One lives and lets others live is Madhyaman (Neither good nor

bad) and

• One who saves others even at personal risk is Uthaman (The

Best).

• Vamana belittled himself as a dwarf and begged Bali for

saving Indra and saving Bali himself. Hence, Uthaman.

• Swami Desika describes this Avatara as "Rakshaa Vaamana". The

purpose of this Avatara is pure and simple "to protect".

• Since Mahabali was the grandson of Prahlaada to whom the Lord

had given a promise not to kill any of his descendents, He spared

Mahabali and made him the Lord of the nether world. To this day, Lord

stands s guard to Mahabali's kingdom.

 

Do you know why Mahabali, the invincible came to be humbled?

• When once, he confronted Prahlaada and spoke ill of Lord

VishNu, Prahlaada cursed him that he would lose his entire luster.

• Even so, he could be vanquished only when he was subjected to

the curse of his Guru. When Sukraachaarya, his Guru, protested

against the gift to Vamana, Mahabali refused to heed his advice and

said "If Lord VishNu Himself were to beg of him, he would deem it a

privilege to offer a gift to him". Thus slighted, his Guru got mad at

him and cursed that he would lose his kingdom.

 

Uth, Uthara and Uthama:

"Uth" means exalted. We are born as human. Bhadda Jeevas are "Uth"

"Uthara" is above "Uth": Muktas and Nityas are "Uthara"

"Uthama" is highest. The Lord is "PurushOttama" and hence, "Uthama"

 

 

Why did He become dwarfish in stature?

• When someone goes to beg, it is beneath one's dignity.

Naturally, one would cringe and look small before the donor. Hence,

He assumed the stature of a dwarf.

• A beggar is an insignificant person, too light to be taken

note of. It is said that even the winds are scared on the approach of

a beggar because he might ask something from the wind itself!

 

Did Mahaalaksmi accompany the Brahmachari Vamana?

Yes. But, Vamana covered her on his chest with the deerskin (maan

thOle) he was wearing.

You know why?

• If he had not done so, Kataaksham of Mahaalakshmi would have

fallen on Mahaabali and the very purpose of the Lord would have been

thwarted.

• Then, the Lord could have left her behind and not taken her

along with Him.

• If He had done this also, without her presence, the Lord

could not have accomplished what he wanted to!

• What a "catch 22" situation for the Lord!

 

pEr paadi: The name of the Lord is more powerful than the Lord

Himself!

• It was the name of "hridaya kamala vaasa" that enveloped her

with saris. Lord KrishNa did not appear in person!

• It was Rama's name that helped AnjanEya to jump over the

ocean, while Rama had to build laboriously a bridge to cross over to

Lanka!

 

naangaL: we, Includes gopas and gOpis

nam paavaikku: for our paavai vow

ChaatRi: observing, in the name of (lit. wearing) that is, "Bhagavad

Preethyartham"

neeraadinaal: if we bathe

 

theengu: evil

inRi: without

 

naadu ellaam: whole country.

• It is said that when someone reads "ViraaTa Parvam" of Mahaa

Bhaarata, the entire place will be blessed with copious rains.

• When one has 12 saligraamams in one's home, it becomes equal

to a "KshEtram" and will impart auspiciousness to the entire vicinity.

thingaL: (every) month

 

mum maari: triple rainfall; the proverbial triple showers every month

representing

- Ananya Seshatvam,

- Ananya Upaayatvam and

- Ananya Prayojanatvam.

 

The triple rains are deemed to shower in honor of

(i) Brahmins who recite the Vedas- Vedam Odhiya Anthanarkku Onru;

(ii) Chastity of womenfolk - Maathar Mangaiyar Karpinukku Onru; and

(iii) Kings who uphold justice - Neethi Ninridum Mannavarkku Onru"

 

TiruvaLLuvar says:

"Nallaar oruvar uLarEl avar poruTTu

Ellarkkum peyyum mazhai"

Meaning "The rains will reward all for the sake of just one good soul"

 

peydhu: will fall (rain)

Ongu: tall, overgrown

perum: big

 

sennel: high-quality paddy crops; Fields with tall grown plants

(indicates prosperity of the land)

 

oodu: amidst

 

kayal: a type of fish that become as fat as elephants

 

ugaLa: will playfully swim around. Fish roaming here and there

(indicates abundance of life forms)

 

poom: beautiful

 

kuvaLai: a Tamil poetic landscape (neydhal); a type of flower

pOdhil: in that flower

poRi: shining, beautiful

 

vaNDu: bees; Both the Lord and the Acharyas are always described as

VanDu, also called

'Shadpada' six footed. The six feet are Jnaana, Sakti, Bala,

Aiswarya, Veerya and Tejas.

 

Acharyas are also compared to cows because of their infinite

compassion.

 

"Anraikku Eenra Kanrukku Irangum Dhenuvaip Pola Nam Acharyarkal"

Like the cow that gives milk profusely as if the calf was ' just

born',

 

If we fall at the feet of the Acharyas, they would unstintingly feed

us with the Rahasya Arthas secrets contained in Sri Bashyam,

Bhagavad Gita Bashyam, Bhagavad Vishayam, Rahasya Traya Saram etc.

 

kaNN paduppa: sleeping; Bees disturbed from the flowerbeds where they

were sleeping

 

There is a poetic imagery here. The male bee gets into the Lotus

flower and after drinking in the nectar, feels so drowsy that it

falls asleep within the flower. At sunset, the flower closes its

petals and the bee is trapped inside till next morning when the Sun

rises and the flower blossoms, releasing the bee. The female bee was

waiting the whole night and when the male bee approaches it, there

ensues a family feud in which the female bee accuses the consort of

infidelity. The male bee is hard put to explain its predicament.

 

thEngaadE: without moving (without any fear)

pukku: go inside

irundhu: staying

seerththa: bountiful

mulai: udders

paRRi: grasp

vaanga: extracting

kudam: pots

 

niRaikkum: fill up; it is the paucity of vessels to hold, not the

dearth of the ever-flowing milk (in Swapadesa: of Acharya's Upadesa).

 

vaLLal: generous; The prosperity that rains bring is brought out

graphically by reference to cows that yield milk incessantly having

been tickled by the fish that swim in the water filled fields and the

bees disturbed from out of their flowerbeds.

Hence, VALLAL: (Munificent).

 

Kambar while praising his mentor, SaDayappa vaLLal's munificence

expresses similar sentiments saying that the buffaloes in

TiruveNNainallur taking bath in the tank when tickled by the big

fishes would think that their calves were demanding milk and go on

yielding milk all the way till they reach their homes.

 

"mETTerumai vaavi puga muTTu varaal kanru enru

veeTTaLavum paal soriyum veNNaiyE naaTTil

Adaiyaa neDum kadavum anjal enra sollum

uDaiyaan SaDaiyappan oor"

 

In SwaapadEsam, Acharyas used to explain that we need not even ask

for Bhagavaan's kaaruNyam; It would be enough, if we do not resist

him or shut him out". Such is the "VaLLal" quality of the Lord.

 

perum pasukkaL: big cows. The cows became fat not because of eating

grass but because of listening to the enchanting music of the flute

of KrishNa.

 

neengadha: un-remitting, un-decaying

selvam: wealth

niRaindhu: (the land will be) full of

 

Result? NEENGAATHA SEVAM refers to Brahma Gnaanam

"When we chant the name

Of Him who measured the worlds

With His outstretched foot

Do service to our Maiden-deity

And bathe in the river,

All the land will be blessed

With timely rains in plenty,

And fish will frolic

Amidst the full-grown paddy stalks,

While spotted beetles drowse

In the sweet lilies

Great cows will gift

Pot after pot of milk

To tireless cowherds

And lasting prosperity

Will abound,

Oh! MY Maidens!"
