• “Ambaram” = “a”

• “unthu” = “u”

• “Muppathu” = “ma”

• KuthuviLakku in the middle represents “Vibhakti”

• kappam thavirkkum kaliyE thuyilezhaay * = DushTa nigraham

• ceppam utaiyaay thiRal utaiyaay = Qualities needed for the above

• Who are the “muppathu moovar”?

- Vasus 08

- Rudras 11

- Adityas 12

- ViswedEvas 02 (some substitute Indra and Prajaapati)

Total 33 each having say over one crore of their subordinate Devtas. That

is why, they are referred generically as “MuppathumukkODi dEvas”

• In Svapadesam, “you are antaryaami of these 33 crores of dEvas.

• Aham hi sarva yagjnaanaam bhOKtaa cha prabhureeswara:”

• When Gajendra called “AadimoolamE”, everyone back stepped saying

“I am not “Aadi-moolam” It was Bhagavaan who came to his rescue because the

honorific “Aadi-moolam” fitted only him.

 

amararkku

• “Amarar” means “Those who do not get destroyed”. But this is only a

comparative statement. Compared to other beings they are supposed to live

much longer to appear as if they have no end at all. But, during PraLayam”

even “amarars” have to take their abode in the tummy of Bhagavaan!

• Why do they refer to “amarars”?

• It is to question the Lord “Do you rush to (munn senru) help these

selfish, numerous, (men) devas only and not us mortal bucolic womenfolk

devotees who are just a few in number?”

• dEvas come to you when they are in distress. When their work is done, they

will claim “IswarOham”. We are not like that. We are ever and anon your

Daasas and we always call ourselves “Dasoham”

 

mun cenRu *

 

• As UpEndra, even before they call, you go to them (munn senru)

• Similarly, you have to rush to us BEFORE misfortune befalls us.

• Mahakavi Subhramanya Bharathiaar wrote:

“hari, hari, hari enraaL abhayam ‘UNAKKU’ abhayam enraaL

Kariyanukku aruL purindu anru kayathiDai mudalaiyin uyir muDithaai”

Why “UNAKKU” abhayam?

Why freedom from fear FOR YOU?

“You were scared that if you had not acted quickly, you would incur

everlasting opprobrium”

The same was the case with Prahlaadan.

• They seem to warn the Lord “Now, if you do not accept us and help us, with

Godspeed with real speed, you will forfeit your glories”

 

kappam thavirkkum

 

• * “Kappam” means “kambam” like “Bhoo-kambam” – Earth-quake.

• It also means “trembling”. You relieved the trembling of 33 crores of

dEvas.

• When Asuras objected to your chasing them, you said:

“sOham vO nihanishyaami rasaatala gataanapi” – For the sake of celestials to

whom I have offered abhayam, I am determined to chase you out, even if you

go hide in the nether worlds (rasaatala)

• IN this respect, Kshatriya Dharma equals NarayaNa Dharma - Protecting the

loyal ones by decimating their foes. Why not you do it for us now

• In Svapadesam, “remove agjnaanam”

 

kaliyE! (lit. miDukkanE) = One who is majestic, none to compare your valor

• In Svapadesam, “Oh! AntharyaamiyE!” (Oh! You, the indweller!)

 

thuyilezhaay *

• They thought that KrishNa was forcing Nappinnai down on the bed, as she

was trying to get up.

 

ceppam utaiyaay

• “Seppam” means “enthusiasm, Honesty, Desire, Being straightforward, Being

same in thought, word and deed.

• You have all these and you know protecting enemies is bad and protecting

us is good.

• Your enemies are Bhaagavata dvEshis, NOT US!”

 

thiRal utaiyaay *

• “Thiral” means Capability. You are also capable

• Only if desire and capability combine one can achieve

• It is no big deal if a weak person remains tolerant. You should have the

power to perform. Then, desire can be meaningful. You have both. What are

you waiting for?”

• Dasaratha had the desire to prevent Rama from going to the forest but he

had no power!

“Setraar” means “Aasrita VirOdis”

* Those who said “Tattvam anru” now realized that the duos were really

sleeping. So, they say “Thuyil ezhaaI’

• Breasts hat look like golden domes (Seppenna0 were also equally soft (menn

mulai), so soft that it is doubted whether even the soft Panchasayanam would

hurt.

 

cevvaayc

• He has nectarine mouth; she has shining red lips.

• This reminds us of funny combinations in the realm of celestials:

Kinnaras have huiman faces but horse like bodies;

Gandarvas have horse like faces but human bodies.

They were said to be jealous of one another!

• There is a belief that when a person chews paan and the lips become red,

it indicates that spouse of that person loves the chewer more! Hearing this,

a friend who was separated from his spouse tried to test the belief by

putting out his tongue every time after chewing paan to see if it turned

red!

• When a prospective groom visited his would-be-bride, she happened to be

chewing paan. On sighting the groom, she enquired with her mother “Do you

advise me to swallow this?” The groom thought that she was referring to him

and ran away helter-skelter!

 

ciRu maruNGkul *

• She was like a steak of lightning

• Seeing that he was expert in upama (comparison) KaaLidas’s wife nagged him

to write a verse describing her and he did. Here it is:

 

“mEru parvata samaana madhyamaa, tintrinitaa samaana lOchanaa/

Arka sushka phala kOmaLa sthanee, vriddha vaanara mukhaath RaajasE”

 

Meaning:

“Your midriff is like the Meru Mountain;

Your eyes are like the leaves of a tamarind tree

Your breasts are like the dried fruit of the “madar” tree (erukkam) your

face shines like an old monkey!”

 

nappinnai naNGkaay

• The gOpis saw that Nappinnai was waking up. So, they now call her

“nappinnai nangaai”

• “nagai” also means “young”. Nappinnai is a nitya yuva (eternally young)

like the Lord.

• How does one get old?

• Here is an anonymous SlOka that explains this phenomenon:

• Atvaa jaraa manushyaaNaam anatvaa vaajinaam jaraa/

• Amaithunam jaraa sthreeNaam vastraaNi aatapE jaraa//

 

Meaning:

“Man becomes old by too much walking; horses by not walking;

A woman by not having sex; clothes that are dried in the hot Sun for long”

thiruvE

 

• Why appease Nappinnai now?

It is because, she is “Thiru”. If it were not for her presence by the side

of KrishNa, it would have become difficult for them to secure the grace of

KrishNa.

Swami Desika explains the characteristics of “Thiru”:

 

Aardra aparaadhini janEpi abhi rakshaNaartham

rangEswarasya ramayaa vinivEdhyamaanE/

paarsvE paratra bhavatee yadi tatra na syaat

praayENa dEvee vadanam parivartitam syaat//

 

Meaning:

“Oh! Mother! Even when a worst sinner comes to Bhagavaan pleading for

protection, you are there to recommend sympathy. Though Periya piraaTTi is

on one side, without your benign glance on the other, the Lord’s look will

be surely turned away from the direction of the sinner!”

 

For, did not Sri Sita tell Hanumaan, when he suggested decimating the

Raakshasis who tormented her,

“paapaanaam vaa subhaanaam vaa vadaarhaaNaam pLavangama!

Kaaryam karuNamaaryEnana kaschit na aparaadhyati // (VR 6.116.44)

 

Meaning:

“Oh! AanjanEya! Even if these Raakshasis are guilty and deserve to be killed

as you think, or faultless according to me, you have to show mercy towards

them. Who is the world has not erred?”

 

thuyilezhaay *

• “You suffered for 10 months without sleep for protecting those who

surrendered to you. Now, it is enough if you just wake up. You don’t have to

suffer for our sake!”

 

ukkamum

• means “AlavaTTam” made of “khus-khus”

• In Svapadesam, this refers to “dvayam”

 

thattoLiyum than^thu

• ThaTToLI” means “mirror”

• In Svapadesam, it refers to Tirumantiram

• In those days, only bell metal plate was used as mirror.

• Even today, in Srirangam, only such a mirror is used for waking up

PerumaaL.

• It is believed that looking into a mirror even as one gets up from sleep

is very auspicious.

• Your beloved husband

 

ippOthE emmai

• Right here and Now!

• Earler we said “mai iTTU ezhudhOm” It is now your turn to make us wear

“mai” (Collyrium)

nIraattu

• Relieve us of our “varaha Taapam”- pangs of separation.

• Please do the needful

Muppattu: refers to the valor of the Lord

Seppenna refers to the LakshaNam of womenfolk

Thiru refers to dayaavatvam

The thirtythree-fold Gods

To prevent their subjugation,

Providence! Do awake!

Perfection! Omnipotent!

Who scorches the evil

In the fire of fear,

Taintless one!

Awake!

Oh! Golden, soft bosomed Nappinnai

With red-hued lips and tiny waist!

Goddess of beauty!

Awake from sleep!

Grant us will and light

And, your husband’s presence

To bathe us in coolness,

This very moment,

Oh! My Maidens!”
