Guest guest
Dear Sri Sudarshan and other Bhagavatas: I do agree with Sri Sudarshan that "those who those who do so perform it (sandhya) should be careful not to make too much of a fuss about it". None in our forum is guilty of what he accuses. I believe nobody, I repeat, nobody is strutting about proclaiming a "holier than thou" attitude nor condemning those not doing it! They are only adhering to his dictum that "It is indeed very important to spread this message to all corners of the world" All that is sought to be projected is to dispassionately emphasize the importance of doing Sandhyavandanam as ordained by the Saastras and as incessantly directed by our Acharyas. If people don't brush their teeth and they do not care, it would affect their health. At the same time, it is not wrong to highlight the benefits of brushing and perils of not brushing - which all toothpaste commercials are doing anyway though not without a profit motive). It cannot be construed as decrying people who do not brush their teeth! Even here, it should be noted that unlike in the case of toothpaste commercials, in emphasizing the importance of Sandhya, there is no personal motive, no personal gains involved for the protagonists! Dasoham Anbil Ramaswamy ==================================================================== Dear member, Everything that you, Sri Ramachandran have said about the subject is true. The importance of "sandhyA-karma" can never be over-emphasized in the practice of Vedic faith. It is indeed very important to spread this message to all corners of the world. However, it would not be out of place to remind everyone that while "sandhyA" is indeed imperative, and everyone should perform it unfailingly, those who do so perform it should be careful not to make too much of a fuss about it. In other words, it would befit a person who is regularly and diligently performing "sandhyA" as "nitya-karma" to remain discreet and reticent about it. There is no need to go around broadcasting the fact or "feeling high and holy" about it. Doing so would be akin to going around saying "Do you know, I regularly brush my teeth twice daily without fail. On holidays, I make sure to even floss my teeth and I give myself a thorough gum-massage too. What about you? Are you as regular?". It is very embarrassing, to oneself and to others, when matters of such intimate personal hygiene are discussed graphically in open public. If you brush your teeth regularly, it will surely show. There is no need to advertise the fact. "sandhya-karma" too is a matter of one's personal "spiritual hygiene" ("atma-shucchi", "chitta-shuddhi"). If your "atma" or "chitta" is clean and wholesome, it will shine through by itself in your personality and behaviour. People will notice it themselves and they will know your daily habit and discipline of "sandhyavandanam" has surely something to do with it. The above is not my personal opinion. It was a wise and apt remark made to me once many years ago by an old mentor of mine who is now no more, "vaikunta-vaasi" U.Ve Sri Mukkur Lakshminarasimhachariar. I thought it would be useful to share my memory with other members on the list. Actually more will do it,if it is adapted keeping in tune with the modern life style. I do the aqua and dhyana parts of sandhya during shower/ dry and oral parts while commuting,as compared to not doing it at all! dAsan K.S. tAtAchAr sudarshan madabushi <mksudarshan2002 Tue, 7 Feb 2006 12:05:53 +0000 (GMT) Re: Digest Number 1378: Sandhyavandanam Dear Sri Sudarshan and other Bhagavatas: I do agree with Sri Sudarshan that "those who do so perform it (sandhya) should be careful not to make too much of a fuss about it".
