naDuvil thiruvEdhi

bhaTTAr- pin-pazhagarAm perumAL jEyar-swAmi nam-piLLai.

Continuing on the consultation from

a srEaishNavite of how his AchAryan would interprert a particular point,

let us dwell into an incident among three great souls. Perhpas, this may

not strictly fall within the parameters of magnanimity but whenever I read

this, it is very moving .

naDuvil thiruvEdhi bhaTTAr was a

third generation descendant of Sri kUrathAzhwAn. Sri nam-piLLai was sparkling

in his kainkaryam during the same period. The fame and name Sri nam-piLLai

got from His greatness of knowledge and character did not attracrt Sri

naDuvil thiruvEdhip piLLai perhpas due to his august lineage.

He was holding a royal office in

the kingdom. One day he was proceeding to the royal durbAr when pin-pazhagiarAm

perumAL jEyar was coming across. He asked him to join him. Considring the

divine lineage Sri pin-pazhagiyarAm perumAL jEyar joined him.

The king on seeing them gave due

respects and asked a question " If Sri RamA had led a life of a perfect

human being and did not display Godly quaities , then how could He have

blessed jatAyU to -gacha

lOkAnanuthamAn"--and

for this nothing occurred to naduvil thiruvEdhi bhaTTar. Meanwhile, the

king had to attend to some other work. This gave opportunity for consultation.

He consulted pin-pazhagiyarAm perumAL jEyar "jEyA,

piLLai periya vudaiyArukku mOksham koduthadhai eppadi nirvahippAr?"

--jEyA, How would nampiLLai interpret this cohesively? was his question.

Pat came the reply "sathyEana

lOkAn jeyathi" enRu

nirvahippAr. He will determine this with the help of this slOkam. Sri rAmA

by following the path of truth reigns all the worlds and with this power

he bestows this blessing to periya vuDaiyAr.

The king on hearing this highly

commended and appreciated and presented him with gifts of clothes, jewels

and money. Tears rolled from the eyes of naduvil thiruvEdhi bhaTTar. He

rquested jEyar to lead him to nam-piLLai and surrendred not only the gifts

but himself at his feet. He said these are the gifts i got for a fraction

of your words. YOu should accept me in your ghOsthi was his reply.

"Not just realising that i

have all along was missing your feet, I had been envious. Saying this with

tears rolling down his eyes, Sri naduvil thiruvEdhip piLLai fell at the

feet of Sri nampiLLai who embraced him and blessed him with all the rahasyams.

The greatness of naduvil thiruvEdhip

piLLai on three counts. 1. consulting nampiLLai's disciple without ego.

2. On getting the gifts straghtaway went and submitting it to nampiLLai

and 3. Finally surrendering totally to him-confessing all his doings/undoings.

The greatness of pinpazhagarAm perumAL

jEyar i. accomapnaying naduvil thiruvEdhip piLLai giving respect to the

lineage.

ii. Without hesitating clarifying

the doubts from the vast resources Sri nampiLLai had granted him

The greatness of swAmi nam-piLLai

Accepting Sri naduvil thiruvEdhip piLLai without hesitation and inhibition.

Teaching him all artha vishEsham.

If we read all the above in the

backdrop of the contemporary world of cds/cassettes/ patents and copy rights,

the gretness of heart and broadness of mind will sparkle like the lamp

on a hill
