[INDOLOGY @ ] Is 'firangi/ferangi' a racist term?

In Telugu, firangi means cannon. The whole of Andhra pradesh knows

this word. The foreigners used to fire the firangi's to break the

forts, but no idea if this word was known before colonial period.
