R: [Y-Indology] Latin translations of Sanskrit and Tamil works

Maybe:

coram multis vana loqui peius est, quam amicis iniuriam facere.

amicorum is, in my mind, to be excluded by grammatical rules.

amico is ok if we speak about a precise person.

amicis (plur.) is better if we have in mind to write a subhashita

("proverb") by means of a metonymy.

Since we were dicussing Beschi's original

translation from Tamil to Latin,

it might not be out of place to give

the essential details about him,

so that interested readers might put

the suggestions to improve

the translation directly to him :-)

 

BESCHI (Constantius Joseph, s.j.)was born

in Castiglione-delle-Stiviere

on 8th november 1680.

 

He died in Ampalakat (Travancore State)

on 4th february 1747 according to one

of his biographies and in Manapar

(in year 1742) according to another biography :-)

 

Let me quote one more translation

from Tamil into Latin, which he has given

for kuRaL 394. It is surprisingly long

but I will afterwards quote professor V.V. Raman's

precise tranlation, which he gave on the CTamil list

(everybody interested in Classical Tamil

is invited to join that list, at URL

<CTamil>).

 

That kuRaL can be a good motto

for any discussion list.

Dear Dr. Daniela:

Thank you for the correction. Of course it must be amicis: the dative/ablative

and not

the genitive.

It's so long since I studied Latin in school!

The reference to pulavar tor..il is fascinating. tor..il can be

translated as, 'profession'. pulavar means, 'intellectuals'; so, the

translation can also be: 'intellectual profession'. Members are also

welcome to join the IndianCivilization list, contribute and

My (crude, but much shorter) Latin translation (subject to correction) of Kural

394 would be:

 

<Decerpent cuando convenient, dolent cuando discedent,

Ita viri docti se praebent.>

 

I will appreciate comments from Latin-Tamil scholars.
