As Dominik says, Western Indology does not presume such a view of modernism. But I am sure that Prof. Malhotra will find quite a few people in the West who sincerely believe that Western culture, science etc. is the greatest thing since sliced bread. That, however, is not relevant to a discussion of Indology. Reading the exchange between Prof. Malhotra and his Dalit opponent yesterday, it became clear that they are both equally misguided on a number of points. But at the same time, the quarrel illustrates why it is so difficult to have a rational debate on the Aryan Invasion/Migration Theory: the whole matter has become so inextricably enmeshed in India's political struggles that any attempt to clear up is bound to produce protests everywhere - including, apparently, among the Dalits, whose ideas about "Brahmin Fascists" and other aspects of Hindu history are as preposterous as much of the horseplay produced by the Hindu right.
