End of Nalanda & Odantapura

There has been some discussion on who is resposible

for the end of Nalanda university etc. A very readable

book on the subject is "Buddhist Monks and

Monasteries of India" by Sukumar Dutta. It was

originally published in 1962.

 

I have put some excerpts from the book (from

Introduction, The Devastations, and Mahaviharas as

Universities) at

It is interesting to note that some actual manuscripts

that were once at Nalanda have survived. There are

some in Tibet, and I think some in Nepal. I have seen

photographs of these published somewhere.

 

These manuscripts mention about having been in

Nalanda.

They must have been taken by fleeing students.
