The Sanskrit Tradition in the Modern World

18th Annual STIMW Seminar

Thursday 31st May 2001

University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK

 

The eighteenth annual one-day STIMW seminar will be held on Thursday, 31st

May 2001 from 11.00am to 5.00pm in Room 2.29, Senior Common Room, Old

Library Building, University of Newcastle upon Tyne. The following papers

have been offered:

 

Gwilym Beckerlegge (Open University, Manchester): 'Renunciation and

Activism in Iconographic Representations of seva (service) in two Modern

Hindu Movements'

Antony Copley (Kent): 'Isherwood's Vedantic Quest: Transcending the Ego'

Sergei Serebriany (Moscow): 'The Lotus Sutra: a challenge to Sanskritists'

David Webster (Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher

Education): 'Desire in Vedic Literature'

 

Papers will be sent to participants in advance, so that discussion can

proceed on the basis of a paper that has already been read. There will be

a fee to cover expenses:GBP6.00 for participants in permanent salaried

posts, GBP3.50 for others. Lunch is not included in the fee, but is

available at very reasonable prices. Those unable to attend may have the

papers for GBP3.50. Please make cheques payable to 'University of

Newcastle upon Tyne'.
