Guest guest
Dear members of the list, first of all: thanks to those of you who answered my question regarding breaths! Here is another question. I am concerned with a grammatical form in Sanskrit called the absolutive or gerund. This usually ends in -tvaa, -tya or -ya (kRtvaa, aazritya, aadaaya). The category is well know in other Indian languages, e.g. in Hindi, it usually ends in -kar: bol kar, paRH kar, jaa kar). As far as I know, in all modern Indian languages, such absolutives/gerunds are grammatically *active*. (bol kar = "having said", not "having been said"). This is what I want to test. Are there any Hindi/Urdu-speakers or speakers of other Indian languages out there who know of cases where similar forms have a *passive* meaning? I would be happy to get examples.
