Guest guest
Dear list members, I was unable to get answers to these questions about the Rudram on the old Indology list so I thought I'd try once more on the new list. 1) All the chanting books and recordings of the Rudram litany I've come across are the version from the Taittiriya Samhita. Is the Rudram chanted today in Saivite temples (or anywhere else) in the versions from the other Yajur veda samhitas? 2) All the chanting books and recordings of the Rudram litany I've come across are Taittiriya Samhita chapters 4.5 and 4.7 but always include the following interpolated verses. In the Rudram chant TS 4.5.1 is always followed by the following line (which is not from the vedic corpus as far as I can see): namaste astu bhagavanvizvezvarAya mahAdevAya tryambakAya tripurAntakAya trikAlAgnikAlAya kAlAgnirudrAya nIlakanThAya mRtyunjayAya sarvezvarAya sadAzivAya zrIman mahAdevAya namaH | TS 4.5.11 is always followed by the following verse which consists of lines from various different parts of the vedic texts including the Rg veda): tryAmbakaM yajAmahe sugandhim puSTivardhanaM | urvArukamiva bandhanAnmRtyormukSIya mAmRtAt | Yo rudro agnau yo apsu ya oSadhISu yo rudro vizvA bhuvanA viveza tasmai rudrAya namo astu | tamuSTuhi yaH sviSuH sudhanvA yo vizvasya kSayati bheSajasya | yakSvAmahe saumanasAya rudram namobhirdevamasuraM duvasya | ayaM me hasto bhagavAnayaM me bhagavattaraH | ayaM me vizvabheSajoya& zivAbhimarzanaH | Ye te sahasramayutaM pAzA mRtyo martyAya hantave | tAnyajnasyamAyayA sarvAnava yajAmahe | mRtyave svAhA mRtyave svAha | Om namo bhagavate rudrAya viSNave mRtyurme pAhi | prANAnAM granthirasi rudro mA vizAntakaH | tenAnnenApyAyasva | Namo rudrAya viSNave mRtyurme pAhi | TS 4.7.11 is followed by: iDA devahUrmanuryajnanIrbRhaspati rukthAmadAni za&siSadvizvedevaH sUktavAcaH pRthivi mAtarmA mA hi&sIrmadhu maniSye madhu janiSye madhu vakSyAmi madhu vadiSyAmi madhmatIm devebhyovAcamudyAsa& zuzrUSeNyAM manuSyebhyastaM mA devA avantu zobhAyai pitaronumadantu | Does anyone know if there are any references in the religious literature about these interpolated verses and why they were included into the Rudram litany? Do we know when these were included? Do these interpolationed verses appear as complete verses anywhere else? Many thanks, Harry Spier 371 Brickman Rd. shailendra_mishra
Since a no. of rs have answered the first part of your question. Here is the answer to the second part - The verses that you see that are from other parts of vedic text are chanted because they are considered "Phala-sruti" for the Rudram. The same thing is done for Srisuktam as well (the phala-sruti for sri-suktam is longer than the sukta itself). Also, the verse Namastestu Bhagavan Vishveshvaraya.. is only chanted during Rudra Abhisheka not during Rudra homa or any other Rudra rituals. It has a ritualistic significance in Abhisheka (you need to see this done in person to find out what it is). Dear list members, I was unable to get answers to these questions about the Rudram on the old Indology list so I thought I'd try once more on the new list. 1) All the chanting books and recordings of the Rudram litany I've come across are the version from the Taittiriya Samhita.
