I don't know of Munda speaking folks in TN or Karnataka or

Kerala? Are there any references for Munda folks of South India?

There is a Fig. (9?) in the article (URL given below)

which puts many Munda folks in South India? Who are they,

what are they called?

Any MuNDa languages in S. India?

Thanks,

N. Ganesan

I saw that. But still I want to know whether there are any

MuNDa languages. LS once gave a paper by one Kamatchinathan

which puts many MuNDa folks in Sangam texts!!

Also, Mr. Patrick Harrigan, (webmaster for www.murugan.org,

www.katikama.org, www.vedda.org, ...) stayed as our guest

and, gave a nice lecture on KatirkAmam pilgrimage.

The veDDas' name is similar to vETTai 'hunting',

vETuvar/vETTuvar 'hunters', vETTal/vENDal 'to desire'

and so on. In the South, vETuvars are devotees of VishNu,

their common name is kOPPaNan/kOpaNan, there are poems

and inscriptions by them from 11th century. GopaNa,

the Vijayanagara minister and a brahmin, restored Hindu

worship in Southern temples. There was a discussion about

kOvalan, a tamil name in old Indology archives, and I think

Tiru. Chandra gave the DED entries. Typically, the vETuvars

run a temple for Krishna in TN. Called mAl-ai kOyil. mAl = Vishnu

"ai" is elder brother, father, in Tamil (Cf. discussions

in CTamil ), and Cattle is taken to mAlai kOyil

to be blessed by vETuvar priests. 4-5th century hero stone

inscriptions, called Chengam herostones published by Nagasamy

about 30 years ago, are from the vETuvar temples.

Hence my question:

Any references where MuNDa substratum is discussed

among veDDas, S. India, etc.,?

N. Ganesan
