Dear Members and Lars in particular

I showed the query to Dr. Tikkanen (we share an office), who is not a

list member, and he gave the following note:

-------

Hindi conj. pple. as passive

Wed, 9 May 2001 17:52:02 +0200

<Btikkanen

klaus.karttunen

In Hindi the conjunctive participle (gerund, absolutive) in -kar or -ke

can have both passive and active meaning. E.g. ciTThii likh-kar bhejii

gaii 'the letter was written and sent / the letter, having been written,

was sent'. Cf. vah ciTThii likh-kar bhejegaa 'he will write the letter

and send it / after writing the letter he will send it'.
