Guest guest
Genetics is a closed book to me - but I do recall hearing that genetically the distance between humans and other primates is fairly small. Arun's post about the genetic differences between West and East Europeans reinforces my questioning of the real significance of the results reported in Bamshed et al.'s paper. Perhaps what we really need is genetic investigation of the 'monkey-man' currently terrorising Delhi. - Will Sweetman
Guest guest
The figure about there being only a 1% difference between humans and chimpanzees, genetically, is misleading: that 1% is, as you might expect, very important and packed with information. I suppose the most famous is the work of Cavalli-Sforza, who pioneered "genetic geography" of ancient migrations (showing, for example, the existence of a "genetic slope" possibly showing out-migration of farming groups from the Middle East across Europe, which probably is a basis for Renfrew's theory that Indo-European languages spread out from Anatolia with migrating farmers). So while there are certainly limitations to its use, I wouldn't agree with you that the evidence from genetics has no significance. Regard, Rohan. >Genetics is a closed book to me - but I do recall hearing that genetically >the distance between humans and other primates is fairly small.
