Dear Members,

Osian as mono-word place name occurs in three districts of India i.e

Osian (26*18’N, 73*1’E)in Jodhpur district of Rajastan;Osian (19*57’N/

86*20’E)in Puri district of Orissa and Osian (26*21’35N/80*41’30E)in Unnao

district of U.P. I have visited Osian of Rajastan and Orissa.(planning a

trip to Unnao) There are remarkable similarities in tradition associated

with both the places; in iconography (two-armed Ganesa images which are

otherwise rare and more ancient are found in both the places. The hydronymy

Luni is found in all the three areas. And there are so many other common

grounds in castes, communities, titles etc.,

Oswals are considered to be the natives of Osian. Osia in Marwari language

means 'taking shelter'I would like to request the (Y) Indology members to

suggest any other possible etymology for the name Osian or provide comment

on the 'transfering' of the name from one end to another.

Thanks for reading,

R.Balakrishnan

The Sanskrit term for Osian is "Upakesha", thus the gachchha (order

of ascetics) originating from there was called Upakesha Gachchha. It

was also called uukesha or uesha. In vernacular "osvaala.N rii

utpatta raa kavitta" is it called "oyasiyaa".

If we consider Upakesha to be the sanskritized word, its old name was

thus something like uesa or ukesha. I haven't seen an explanation of

what it means.

According to tradition, it was settled by migrants from Shrimal

(Bhinmal) town.
