I shall be very grateful to all scholars who will send to me a short

biographical outline of Navakalidasa, the name of Madhava as author of a

one of the most renowned Shankara's biography.

Many thanks,

Daniela

There is a bhAgavatacampU of one Abhinava Kalidasa, published

from Krishnadas Academy, Varanasi, in 2000. The author's date

is given as 16th century. The publication comes with a TIkA by

one Haridatta Sastri, and may have some biographical details.

This is listed in the Library of Congress catalog

Whether this Abhinavakalidasa is the same as the Navakalidasa

mentioned in a verse in the Sankaravijaya of Madhava is a more

complicated issue. This has been hotly debated in some circles.

There is a paper by W. R. Antarkar, in the Journal of the Univ.

of Bombay, 1972, XLI, 77: 1-23. My own paper on Sankaravijaya

texts (forthcoming in a 2001 issue of International Journal of

Hindu Studies) has a review of this issue, albeit a brief one,

for reasons of space.

However, please see the interpretations of the name Navakalidasa

in Dhanapatisurin's Dindima and Acyutaraya's Advaitarajyalakshmi

(commentaries on the Sankaravijaya of Madhava). Note that another

name (Vyasacala) is also found in the Sankaravijaya of Madhava.

Best regards,

Vidyasankar
