I am told that two candidates were short-listed for the position of VC (this happened a few months ago, just before the Left Front Govt. in Kerala got thrown out). Guess who got selected? One who did not know Sanskrit. [A qualification which Witzel recommends when he comments on others' postings]. Panikkar the card-holder was not only made the VC of the Sankaracharya Sanskrit University at Kaladi but was also made a chair of a committee set up by the Govt. to constitute a Kerala History Congress. As members may know, VC appointment of a State University is a State subject and the Centre has no control over the appointments made in such Universities. Indology should certainly get concerned at the politicisation of a place of learning for Sanskrit in Bha_rata. This is an instance of nexus between Indology and Communism. Next step, will he be invited to Harvard for the next conference to deliver the Presidential Address on Sanskrit or S'ankara's contributions to philosophy?
