Farewell, Mr. Agarwal

Dear Mr. Agarwal,

I am deeply touched when I hear that you have plowed through hundreds of

journals looking for papers written by me. Not finding any must have been

heart-rending. But there it is: I haven't found any by you either. Probably

not a great loss, but one never knows. You may have had your lucid moments.

I am sorry that my thesis was such a hard read for your that you didn't get

the point, but try a couple of times more. Often, things become clearer

with a second or third reading.

However, since it is obvious that we thoroughly despise each other, I think

that it perhaps would be better if we simply stopped talking. Not only are

we wasting each other's time, but from what I understand, we are also

wasting the time of the other members of the list. And that is not nice. So

this is my farewell letter to you! May you prosper in your own little world

of evil fascists, racists and other nasty -ists, may you one fine day learn

some manners, and may you achieve a modicum of intellectual moderation so

that you can function among average punters.

But on the other hand: why should you change? You are probably much more

entertaining the way you are!

All the best for the future,

Cordially, Lars Martin Fosse

Ah, what have we here but the grand melodramatic exit, expressing

disdain for those with whom you cannot and will not engage in honest

discourse.

Let all those who wish to study Indology be aware that there is a

difference between Indology and related subjects such as Egyptology.

In Egyptology all those who could have spoken in defense of a

viewpoint have long since disappeared. Indologists are finding out

that such is not the case in India. Surprise, surprise there are

actually homo erectus who are also homo sapiens still surviving in

India and what is more they are articulate, knowledgeable and present

devastatingly logical arguments.

The days when MaxMueller could arbitrarily decide that the Vedas were

written in 1500 BCE based on biblical arguments are long gone and

such assertions will not go unchallenged anymore. To hide under the

assertion that opponents should confine themselves to a "little world

of evil fascists, racists and other nasty -ists" will convince nobody

and is laughable coming from a continent where such eminent 'nasty-

ists' were widely prevalent a scant 50 years ago.

VA: I do not publish in professional Indological journals nor do I

have scholarly pretentions like you. Moreover, when did I claim that

I am a professional Indologist? I am interested in publishing only on

the net so that it is accessible freely and easily and for a number

of other reasons that have been explained elsewhere a number of

times. You can check the following URL once a month for updates:

http://www.voi.org/vishal_agarwal/homepage.html

FYI, I currently have 92 other biographies in various stages of

preparation, and about 25 webpages on various aspects of Indian

philosophy (for beginners) in collaboration with others. Besides,

dozens of webpages on various aspects of Vedic literature. All this

will take several years to appear slowly.

VA: Perhaps you are unaware that you are talking to a professionally

trained statistician. I actually train people in inferential

statistics. I took up your thesis precisely because it was closely

related to my area of professional competence. While your methodology

is elegant and rigorous (and certainly a signficant advance over the

previous works that I had read), haven't you yourself admitted in the

introduction that the thesis does not have a real positive conclusion

(memory might have failed me and I will need to check)? But

nevertheless, anyone can read your work. It is not necessarily your

fault but is most likely due to the nature of the data itself. One

hardly sees any 'statistical study' of Indic texts which is perfect.

BTW, I would really appreciate a list of your publications in reputed

(or non-reputed) journals. The reason is stated above. Actually, I

would appreciate some references (by any author) on application of

statistics to linguistics.

Rest is not worthy of comment.

Sincerely,

Vishal

Is it difficult to see the hypocrisy in these statements? It ain't a

cordial farewell, the stated wishes are just empty. The wishes are

clearly offered to wish the adieu-ed person to be in the midst of

ill-perceived 'evil' f-s, r-s and other -ists, all apparently

non-cordial epithets.

These comments would not have been necessary if the adieu was not bid

on the list for all 350 odd members to read. Hopefully, not all

members of the list should endorse such statements; there may be some

who wouldn't, see how rapidly Witzel approved of Thomson's statements

(which required elaborate explanations later)?

I would be delighted if you would pay close attention to this

passage from the Iliad. It seems to me that your invective is

pointless and misplaced. It contributes little of value, and

amuses no one but yourself. Please, in all decency, rein

yourself in.

Note that I did not initiate this latest round of invective. The

accusations of being 'fascists, racists, nasty-ists ' was not made by

me. It did not amuse me either , as I am certain it was not intended

to. So I hope you will address your remarks to them.

If i recall the Illiad glorifies a war that was fought for even less.
