Nanda's biography of Gandhi, available on the web at http://web.mahatma.org.in/books.jsp?bookcat=og&chap=ch001&link=og has the following : "The book which was ultimately to form his [Gandhi's] strongest bond with Hinduism as well as the greatest influence in his life was the Bhagavad Gita. He had read it in 1890, in Sir Edwin Arnold's verse rendering The Song Celestial. In South Africa, he studied other translations with the original, and the book became his daily reading. He memorized one verse every morning while going through his morning toilet, until he had the entire poem by heart." -Arun Gupta
