Indology's finest on withdrawal

A short note from a busy desk:

The reasons why scholars withdraw from the list is very simple: Originally,

the Indology list was a tool for active indologists, a tool used for

information exchange as well as debate. With the incursion of the OITers on

the list, the volume of nonsensical messages grew enormously, and busy

scholars don't have endless time for nonsense. The result was that after

several years of earnest attempts to have a dialogue, scholars started to

give up and withdrew. That destroyed the Indology list as a scholarly tool

and reduced it to a populist chat-room. If there are not enough

professionals on the list, it becomes a waste of time for other

professionals. Consequently, those scholars who were still hanging out on

the list, also gave up. When I started flaming the list some days ago, it

produced so much fracas and excitement that a few of you lost your masks

and showed your real faces. They were as expected. I may possibly have

given the list its coup-de-grace, but it was high time someone did, since

it was obvious that there was no serious dialogue left. No scholarly

dialogue, since most of the scholars had gone, and no general meaningful

debate on India's situation, since the interlocutors were not really

listening to each other and had no mutual respect. The list had simply

grown to become an enormous waste of time.

It is obvious that a new concept is needed for a general interest list

within the field of Indology. I know several people are looking into such

concepts now. The old indology list and this one has been an interesting

course in political psychology. Since I take an interest in Indian

nationalism and politics, I have learned a lot from it. But it is time to

move on. Indology has ceased to be interesting as a source. It has become

repetitive. There are now other sources to be addressed.

I would like to thank all of you, particularly the "fanatics", for teaching

me a lot. You are a trying bunch, but boring you are rarely.

This is my last message to the list.

I shall resign from it presently.

Good luck, everybody.

Fosseji, As a child the first line of defense almost always is 'he

did it,its his fault'. So now the 'fanatics' are driving you away ?

And who pray, are these worthies, the trying bunch, can we have some

names. And you have yet to answer my question (I realize long

farewells are painful) of why you used the words 'fascist, racist and

nasty-ist' when referring to some of us.

You are the poorer, Mr. Kumar. Mr. Frølandshagen, I recommend him to you.

I will open the A channel tomorrow on terms to be announced, which will not

include messages such as this one. The departures of some demonstrates that

those who do not want to participate can easily remove themselves. I of

course will assist in removing anyone who wishes it. If so, please inform

me off-line, the sooner the better.

I don't mind if you enjoy yourself by criticising others, but it is

risky to mention the name of apparent neutral persons that way, since

as seen in this list, not everyone will let it pass silently.

I could have been one of those, you know. :)

However, I do understand your effort if that somehow would save the

apparently sinking ship.
