Venue: Simon Fraser University, main campus, Burnaby, BC, Canada contact: Hari Sharma, Coordinator, International South Asia Forum sharma Some of the South Asian personalities who have accepted our invitation to come and participate: - Mr. Farhad Mazhar, Bangladesh (prominent writer, poet, social activist) - Dr. Parvez Hoodhboy, Islamabad (Physcial Scientist) - Dr. Hamida Bano (academic, and with J&K Federation of Civil Society Organizations) - Mr. Zafar Meraj, editor, Kashmir Monitor, Srinagar. - Mr. Tapan Bose, South Asian Forum for Human Rights, based in Kathmandu, Nepal. - Dr. K. N. Panikkar, History professor, JNU, (currently, Vice Chancellor at a university in Kerala) - Dr. Manoranjan Mohanty, Delhi University - Dr. Bidyut Mohanty, (Women's Studies Centre, and Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi) Many delegates from South Asian organizations from across North America and Europe are expected to be attending the conference. And we hope to have sizable participation from various segments of the South Asian community here. The Conference will begin with a semi-formal opening gathering on Friday afternoon, and a dinner - where all the delegates will have a chance to meet each other. On Saturday, there will be formal opening plenary, where the issues will be identified. Some short speeches. And the rest of the day will be devoted to discuss the following themes in work shops. Four of them running concurrently - before lunch and after lunch. Themes: Militarization, Nuclearization and the Quest for Peace The Kashmir Issue Fascism in the Making Education and the re-writing of History Dalits and Other Vulnerable Sections Minorities under Threat Women and Democracy Neo-liberal Take-over and the impact on people, nature, and societies. There are also plans for some recent and relevant documentaries. Saturday Evening: A cultural program - dance drama and people's songs and poetry (a ticketed program, with special rate for the delegates). The well-known Aparna Sindhoor Dance troupe from Boston will be the main feature. Sunday: Plenary; Workshop presentations; Organizational decisions and plans for action. Housing will be provided through billeted accommodations - unless people wish to exercise the option of staying in hostels/hotels/university dormitories (at cost).
