A "negative" letter called puLLi plays a major role

in tamil script. Was told that Prof. H. Falk has mentioned

its appearance from 5th century onwards, in his book,

Schrift in alten Indien.

 

Archaeological discoveries on coins and rock shelters by

Gift Siromoney, Iravatham Mahdevan has pushed back the first

occurence by atleast 300 years. This has a bearing on the

dating of some sUtrams of the grammar, tolkAppiyam as well.
