Guest guest
Both the long articles of Prof Witzel (Autochthonous Aryans-EJVS, 7-3 and Substrate Languages in Old Indo-Aryan-EJVS,5-1) offered valuable information. Under section#9 (Remembrance of Immigration) of EJVS, 7-3, it is said " Another N. Iranian tribe were the (Grk.) parnoi, Ir. *parna. They have for long been connected with another traditional enemy of the Aryans, the paNi (RV+) . Their vara-like forts of the Bactria-Margiana(BMAC) and the eastern Ural Sintasha cultures (Parpola 1988, Witzel 2000), while similar ones are still found today in the Hindukush. The RV regards cattle-rich paNi, with their walled forts (pur, Rau 1976, Elizarenkova 1995), as the traditional, albeit intentionally semi-mythical enemies." To the best of my knowledge Greek parnoi or Iranian *parna are the Iranian tribe of the known history called Parthians. Greek came to know them around Greek contact with the Persian Empire. Rigvedic paNi belonged to the period at least 500 years before Greek parnoi. Forts in BMAC could very well belong to Parthians of the known history and not to paNis of RV. Are there another criteria to identify Iranian *parna with paNi of RV since description of forts is not convincing evidence? Also what is wrong in identifying parna with Parthians? AMT proponents oppose identifying paNi with Phoenicians. In that case by what name Phoenicians were known in 1000 BCE? Phoenicians were not calling themselves by that name. And what is the origin of the word "Punic" in three wars mentioned in European history as the "Punic Wars"? Thanks. N.R.Joshi.
