Thank you Dr. Valerie J.Roebuck for your link between Latin Punicus,

Greek Phoinix and Phoenicians. Now it would be interesting to find out by

what name the Phoenicians were known to the Jews of King Solomon (1000

BCE) since the Phoenician king Hiram(<Ahiram<Akhiram) built the temple

for Solomon. If anybody has this information, please let us know.

Secondly it would be interesting to find out by what name Phoenicians

were called by Persians of Daurius. Phoenician navy later on became

Persian navy. And it would be still interesting to see whether there was

reference to Phoenicians in the original book Pariplus (not the one

substituted-Pariplus of Erythrian Sea, around 1 AD) written by the naval

admiral Skylax after the completion of the project on Suez Canal. Does

anybody have the information on the availability of the copy of the

original Pariplus in any library? I am not convinced of connection

between the Iranian tribe *parna of the known history (500 BCE) and

mythical paNi of Rigveda (1000 BCE) as suggested by Prof. Witzel based

upon description of forts. To the best of my knowledge, Iranian tribe

*parna could be very well the Parthians of the known history (200 BCE to

300 AD). There also exist the possibility that the earlier version of the

tribe name *parna could be different just like Elamites name is not

Elamite. Are there any linguistic criteria to connect the name *parna to

paNi? Thanks. N.R.Joshi.
