To the best of my knowledge, character of PaNi was different from Arya,

DAsa and Dasyu, all described in RV. According to Prof.Witzel, Iranian

*parnoi is RV PaNi. If this is true, then somewhere in the ancient

Persian and or Zoroastrian literature or scriptures like Avesta, there

must be the description of *parnoi. If there is indeed such description,

does it match with the description given RV? The ancient Phoenicians were

naval power and rich like paNi and they were the traders (paN=to trade)

par excellence in the ancient world. Their empire was called Purple color

Empire. Perhaps the word Canannite has to do with this purple color. To

the best of my knowledge the word *parnoi was current in Iran around the

Persian Empire(500-600 BCE). However, I do not see any indication of

conflict between rich paNi (*parnoi) from Eastern Iran/Afghanistan area

and the Persians during the expansion of their empire by Cyrus the Great.

However Phoenicians declined to help Persians to attack their sister

province Carthage. It is difficult to think that rich *parnoi would

submit to the Persians without fight if they ever were present in the

Eastern Iran as suggested by Prof. Witzel. I will appreaciate if scholars

could shed more light on this identification(*parnoi=paNi) including

Prof.Witzel. Thanks. N.R.Joshi.
