1. KarNATakashabdAnushAsanam (KSA) of

BhaTTAkalankadeva (1604 AD) is a grammar of Kannada

language in the sUtra style consisting of 4 pAdas and

592 aphorisms. There is a vRtti called "BhA.sA

ManjarI" and a vyAkhyA thereon, called

"ManjarI-Makaranda" by the author himself. The sUtras,

the vRtti and vyAkhyA are in Sanskrit. KSA was first

edited by B Lewis Rice and published by Mysore

Government Central Press, Bangalore, 1890. The editor

compares this grammar to PANini's A.sTAdhyAyI and the

vyAkhyA "ManjarI-Makaranda" to Patanjali's

MahAbhA.sya.

 

2. Sutras such as 'tasminniti nirdi.sTe

pUrvasya'(26), 'yena vidhistadantasya'(28), 'samarthaH

padavidhiH'(292) are directly borrowed from PANini,

whereas sUtras such as 'aprayogIt'(32) are taken from

Jainendra grammar.

 

3. The editor has expressed his view in his

Introduction :"Why, it may very naturally be asked,

was a work of such magnitude and authority as this

grammar never before published or used for reference

by the scholars in the language...." and in the

Preface:" I have now the satisfaction of seeing it at

last completed, and of leaving it as a legacy to the

KannaDa people, in the hope that it may prove an

incentive to a more scholarly study of their pithy (as

their own early authors call it) and expressive

language".

 

4. Rice's wish that his edition might prove an

incentive to a more scholarly study is found in the

revised edition of the same work by R Narasimhachar,

published by Mysore Govt Central Press, 1923. More

information on the editions of KSA and its ommentaries

may be found in Appendix I, pp 272-274 of J S Kulli's

"KeshirAja's ShabdamaNidarpaNa",Karnataka University,

Dharwar, 1976.

 

5. Unfortunately the KSA has been published so

far only in the Kannada script (and in Roman also in

1890 edition which was removed in the later editions).

Therefore, this work is not known to scholars

belonging to Central and North India and only those

foreign scholars are aware of this work who are

well versed in the Dravidian linguistics. It is highly

desirable that this work be published in the

DevanAgarI script.

 

6. During 1992-93 I converted the Sutras and the

vRtti "BhA.sA ManjarI" in the DevanAgarI script. If

anybody is interested in its publication or any
