Dear Harry,

The word pratIhAra with meaning 'doorkeeper' in

the light of the PANini sUtra 6.3.122 is not

un-Paninian. It will be quite clear, if you understand

the significance of the term 'bahulam'. This term

means:

In some cases

(i) the rule is applicable when the conditions

required are fulfilled

(ii) the rule is applicable even when the conditions

required are not fulfilled

(iii) the rule is not applicable even when the

conditions required are fulfilled

(iv) the rule is optionally applicable

(v) certain grammatical operation takes place which is

not at all prescribed by the concerned rule.

Best wishes.
