1) Both Sanskrit Worterbuch in 7 vol. and Sanskrit Worterbuch in Kurzerer

Fassung have current entries on the on-line book search engine

www.bookfinder.com. Search under author Bohtlingk (not Boehtlingk!). Of

course it may be listed and still be out of print but its still worth a try

as the prices seem very reasonable.

I've been told that the Sanskrit Worterbuch in Kurzerer Fassung is different

from the larger Sanskrit Worterbuch (other than just being an abridgement).

Perhaps someone could say a few words about what the differences are.

2) I see that the "Encyclopaedic dictionary of Sanskrit on historical

principles" from the Deccan College now has Vol. 6 part 1 published. Up to

what letter is it now? Is it a great improvement over the two Sanskrit

Worterbuchs?

3)Is it still planned to put Boehtlingks dictionary on-line in the Cologne

Dictionary Project.

Many thanks,

The Kurzerer Worterbuch is in three volumes, as compared to the 7

volumes of the big one. It basically gives meanings, but the large-

scale attestations found in the bigger dictionary are missing in this

version. For the purpose of attestations, it is not as useful.

The Deccan College Dictionary, as best as I know, is still mired in

the vowel 'a', may be beginning 'aa', and it is indeed massive in its

scale of attestations compared to the Sanskrit Worterbuch. On the

other hand, at its current speed of progress and the editorial

difficulties in Pune that I hear, I wonder how far it will progress

in my lifetime. Therefore, Boehtlingk-Roth Worterbuch is still the

best overall available source for attestations.
