Indian Calendric Terms

Dear list members,

Is anyone familiar with the terms mAtula and vimala in the context of the

Indian calendar. I've come across them in the editorial notes in an edition

of the Nirnaya Sindhu I have. Does --mAtula-- mean a solar year in general

or is it the name of a specific type of solar year (sidereal, tropical

etc.). Similarly does --vimala-- mean a lunar year in general or does it

have a more precise meaning. Monier-Williams for --mAtula-- only has "a

solar year" and for --vimala-- "a lunar year" and in fact lists both these

words as only occuring in the Indian Lexicons.

Does there exist a comprehensive glossary of Indian Calendric terms?

Many thanks,
