Sanskrit syntax question

Dear list members,

In a verse of a sanskrit text I'm looking at, the editor notes as a possible

variation " tathA " compounded to the following noun contrasted to " tathA "

uncompounded to the following noun.

i.e. " tathA-X " contrasted to " tathA X "(where X is a substantive)

Would any of the list members be able to explain to me the meaning and use

of tathA as the first member of a compound, i.e. how does the meaning of

tathA-X differ from tathA X . I've seen in the sanskrit grammars yathA-X =

" as X, in accordance with X, according to X etc.", but no mention of the

form tathA-X .

Many thanks,

Hello Harry,

Can you cite the actual example you are looking at? That may

help a lot. While one can obviously have both 'tathaagata.h' and

'tathaa gata.h', there would be sometimes a differrence of

meaning.
