Today is Thai Puusam, an important festival for

the ancient god of India whose name is Murukan.

Hindu devotees all over the world make prayers

and penances to him. One of the earliest bhakti

texts from India is TirumurukARRuppaTai in

honor of him.

Particularly famous among Tamils in Singapore,

Malaysia and S. Africa.

Please read about the flowers special to Murukan

in the article by prof. R. Kanchana, Madurai

university. She describes the botanical names

with pictures and several sangam tamil quotes.

and moral redemption among Malaysian Hindus

May Skanda-Muruku bless the world

with more Dravidology endowments among Sanskritists!

Why did you change the name of Murugan to Muruku? is it a mistake or

some other reason for it. Murugan, the god is referred to as Murugan

and 'muruku' is used (sometimes) only as a pet name for persons

called Murugan

Sir, Can you please clarify whether the TirumurukARRuppaTai/ other

texts relate this festival to Murugan?
