Guest guest
In addition to these On general issues of textual criticism the old standby by Paul Mass, Textual Criticism (1958 English Translation) is still very useful. In my own work I also found Martin West's Textual Criticism and Editorial Techniques (1973) extremely useful. Katre points out some important things but does not mention the important effect of local Sanskrit recitation as well as paleographic issues in textual transmission. Some of these have been discussed by M. Witzel as it relates to the Paippalada Samhita and are also discussed in my PhD thesis -The Paippalada Samhita of the Atharvaveda: A critical edition, translation and study of Books 13 and 15. ************************** Carlos Lopez Visiting Instructor Department of Religion Florida State University Ph: (850) 644-9879 Fax: (850) 644-7225 calopez ************************** bushisadork [wedemeyer] Monday, March 04, 2002 5:53 AM INDOLOGY [Y-Indology] Re: Resources: Textual Criticism and Sanskrit? Dear Tim, A good place to start is S. M. Katre, _Introduction to Indian Textual Criticism_ (Poona: Deccan College, 1954). There are important observations made also in the introductory material to the Poona critical edition of the Mahabharata. On textual criticism in general, see the works of G. Thomas Tanselle.
