Guest guest
Prof. Norman Cutler (1949-2002) We are saddened to hear the sudden demise of prof. Norman Cutler. Had the opportunity to meet with him twice, once in Chicago and then in Berkeley. He studied the classical Tamil in Madurai for many years. His book, Songs of experience : the poetics of Tamil devotion, Indiana University Press, c1987 is a classic study of the Tamil bhakti poems. His JAOS paper, Interpreting Tirukkural: The Role of Commentary in the Creation of a Text. Journal of the American Oriental Society, 1992, vol. 112, no. 4, pp. 549-, opens up new areas in KuRaL studies. His notes introducing recent books: Tamil Bhakti in Translation. Journal of the American Oriental Society, 1991, vol. 111, no. 4, pp. 768 Anyone interested in Hindu Bhakti phenomenon or Tevaram cannot miss his doctoral student's study, The embodiment of bhakti, by Karen Prentiss, Oxford University Press, 1999. Hopefully, a memorial volume in honor of him will be produced by Hinduism and Tamil specialists in USA. Regards, N. Ganesan
