Guest guest
Dear list members, I've seen it indicated that suffixes in " anda " cannot be Indo-european and in the Rg Veda identify non-Indoeuropean (and non-Dravidian) substrate loan words (i.e. Pramaganda, see Witzel, substrate languages in Old Indo-Aryan). I've also just come across a reference that the suffix -anda is common to both Luwian and Hittite. See "Leonard E. Palmer, The Greek Language" pages 11-17. Particularily page 17 "It [Anatolian linguistics] has firmly established that 1, the suffixes -anda, -wanda, and a^s^sa are comon to both (a) Luwian and (b) Hittite and 2, they can be added to stems that are (a) Luwian or (b) Hittite or © Common Anatolian." I think this is a quote from E. Laroche. Is it possible that there is some linguistic connection between the suffix in -anda in the Rg Veda and the Anatolian suffixes in -anda. I.e. is this possibly from a common sub-strate? Regards, Harry Spier 371 Brickman Rd.
