Dissertations: Topic development in the N. America, Europe, and India

Dear Indology List,

 

How are dissertations topics developed in N. America, Europe

and India?

 

Generally speaking, are students from these areas assigned

topics by their advisors? Or, do they independently develop their

own topic, and then work with their advisor and committee who

then steer the student in the right direction?

 

Any comments on the process of disserting would be helpful

and appreciated warmly.
